Hey there Snownsky, this is jane yost ... couple of nice plugs on my account ... just want to reassure you that your kids will be in good hands at Roundtop, if not me then some more specialized with the really little ones, i specialize in adults, but do teach kids on occasion. The kiddie ski school is an enclosed area, and they only 'get out' once they can turn both directions and control speed, but be aware, at Roundtop being a small area with a lot of business, esp. on weekends, your kid/s will need helmet. And for you, Roundtop boasts a short pitch which is supposedly one of the top 10 steepest on the north american continent ... but alas very short, short 'n' steep, and fun ... 100% snowmaking, and we'll take natural when we can get it too. It's not Colorado, but between the 3 areas closest to York, which is where i live too, you'll have a nice variety available to you (Liberty & Whitetail too), then there's another sister area, Ski Windham in NY, at which pass-holders get reciprocal benefits ... it's as good a deal as you can get for living near a small area.
About ski shops, in York your best bets are Ed's and Ullr's, then there's Mountainside in Mechanicsburg, 30 mins from here, as well as World Cup up there too ... and others, and all have a different flavor to them, specializing in one thing or another, but with a bit of everything.
Jump on their websites too, as their ski swaps are coming up within the next couple of weekends if you've moved to york by then ... as well as Roundtop's big swap, at which those shops are often present too ... on Sat. Oct. 22nd.
Good luck with the move, see you on the slopes!
