I think you might be right. I thought he was referring to the poweraxe system (two risers bridged by an aluminum bar and damping material).
As for the piston and poweraxe systems performing a function... well, like I said it is possible. They are mechanically sound (that is, not completely cosmetic). I don't know the internal dimensions of the piston, the viscosity of the fluid, or the size of the ports, but it could have a mild effect. The poweraxe system, I have taken apart and examined... assuming they haven't changed it since the original Pilot system, it will do nothing except look cool. The ability of the material to either store or dissipate energy is almost nil. There is not enough of it, nor enough displacement occuring in the system.
