Western Skis

I'm looking to purchase new skis for trips out west and to use during the occasional east coast powder or springtime conditions. They would replace the Atomic REXs that I've used for the past 2 years. I did demo and like the 04/05 Volkl Karma (169 cm), but thought I might like it in 177 cm even more. I'm 5'8" & 157 lbs, and like Wear The Fox Hat, I love my XRC 1100 SWs (163 cm) for hard snow conditions. Does anyone my ht/wt have any experience with the 04/05 or 05/06 Karma or this years Mantra, AC4 , Monster 88 or new B3? By the way, I really liked the REXs. It's just time to try something new. Also, once I decide on a ski and length, I'll need to find a seller- the shops in my area don't carry many wider skis. Thanks.

V-Mantra in 170 or better in 177 would give you all the float you want in powder, and will still rock on the groomers. Based on the gear reviews in Ski this year, you should find them a lot of places, or you can order online where I found them last February. I can't imagine you would be disappointed.

Cirquerider, thanks for your reply. If you have skied the Karma, how do you think it compares to the Mantra. I liked the way the Karma carved surprisingly well (for a fatter ski), on the minimal "hardpack" that I encountered during my demoing at Alta. That versatility comes in handy during spring days when the morning surface is frozen solid and and is a few hours turns to heavy slush. If you think the Mantra would be comparable on the occasional harder snow yet be more stable in chop and powder, it may be the better way to go. Thanks again
