If one visualizes well and can translate the reading to reality at some level, one can actually get a lot from reading. If one does not have the opportunity for time-on-snow, reading and visualization are much better than simply waiting for the next time (if you know what I mean).
Some of us will likely never get to be on-snow as much as we'd like, so we take whatever avenues of improvement we can.
