Econo Lodge Reno, Life or Death?????

Hola friends! I've found really, really, almost too-low-to-believe rates for the Econo Lodge in Reno. Is there a really, really BAD reason for this? Am I putting our lives (and/or sleep) on line? Help!
What is the rate? On weekdays, especially in the winter, when the casinos are desperately looking for customers, they give rooms for free. I received many offers from Boomtown and Peppermill.

Gpaul, my wife thinks that we stayed at the Econo lodge in Reno last year. The rooms and the entire place are on par with most motel 6. Maybee the rooms could have been a bit larger than some motel 6. There was a Harley gathering that weekend and most of the rooms were occupied by the bike group. Not a bad part of town ,close walking to the casinos of the Reno strip. Right off the 80 fwy If it's the same place.

on 5.27, as a last minute thought, we booked the hotel through Hotwire.com for the memorial weekend, the price was about $15/night more than the Motel 6, but it turned out to be the Speakeasy Regency and the room was much better than Motel 6. As you know, hotwire does not tell you which hotel are you booking before you confirm and pay for it.

mkevenson, it is right off the freeway so it's the same one you stayed in. So, not life-nor-sleep threatening, just 1 star at best....?

jackwan1, we will be there 12/29-1/2, so Casino Hotels are not really doing that well on low rates. On Hotwire, in your experience is it better to book closer to arrival date for rooms that may go unsold? Or way ahead, like now?

New Year's Eve

Everything in Reno gets booked up for New Year's Eve. Find something, book it, and take your lumps when you get there. At least you'll have a bed which is more than you can say for some of the celebrants.
hotwire is always my last minute resource, because it does not tell u which hotel/car/flight before you pay for it. In your case, it might be different, try to get the best of it by calling around then compare it to hotwire. They also charge a fee above the tax and quoted price, some thing like $5 per night or so.
in my memorial day case, i could not get any room below 100 but hotwire came in at about $80.

Gpaul, if 1 star was the worst place you have ever stayed and 5 star the Ritz, I would give Econo lodge 2+ stars.

Tks TruckeeLocal, a bunch are already fully booked!

jackwan1, I'll look into this now and as the date approaches; I've got the feeling some Hotel will be left in the bag by some group cancelling....

Tks Mike, you've put a positive side on the property (contrary to the 2 reviews available, and they really pan this place!). We'll take our chances, and remember to get back to you with our impressions, hopefully no offensive language will be forthcoming....

BTW, any other reviews by anybody regarding the Rodeway in South Lake Tahoe????

Please do not stay @ the Econo Lodge in Reno. (What a Waste) There are lots of opportunities, for that time of Year. I don't even think you should stay in Reno and I live here!!

If you are still looking give me the Dates From -too you will be in the Area and I will find info and give you phone numbers to call. But whatever you do, please do not travel from England to (Ski Tahoe) and end up in a shitty I80 Motel in the bowels of Reno

MTT, you are too kind, and no BS! Yes, if you can please help me on special deals not to be found on Internet (believe me, I've pored thru the information); arrive 12/29, depart 1/2, 2 adults and 1 child. Much obliged.

How's the Boomtown Hotel in your neck of the woods? Does it substantially shorten the I-80 drive to Squaw, Alpine?

Oh, btw, not from the UK but Puerto Rico! Gracias!

Boomtown

Boomtown is maybe 10 miles closer to Tahoe (and 10 miles further away from Mount Rose). It's the first (obvious) casino in Nevada when travelling from California via I-80 and is in the middle of nowhere. It appears to be ok - I've even eaten there once or twice in the past :

By the way the new hotel by the airport in Truckee has just opened, like last week to try and pickup the holiday crowds. Given that I haven't seen any announcement I figure that they haven't ramped up their advertising. I'll see if I can get a 'phone number or web-site. Maybe they'd be interested in filling their reservation book by using attractive pricing :

New hotel is the Tahoe-Truckee (normally the area is known as Truckee-Tahoe ) Hampton Inn&Suites, 'phone number (530) 587-1197. They weren't prepared to negotiate a discounted price for me when I went in this morning

I will never stay at Sands, not because its room, but because its next to the rail road and you WILL be disturbed by the train in the middle of the night. :

The lobster buffet on the weekend at Boomtown is great! All you can eat lobster was just like I ordered. However, the two hours wait was unbearable, the line had stratched from the door to the convention center and back. Besides, the rooms are no longer cheap there after the renovation in 2002. I got free weekdays room offers from them all the time, since I used to lead large groups to stay there few times. :

If you are checking in as a "single" take your phone off of the hook, the Clerk will have girls calling all night.

Where? Boomtown or Sands?
With New Years being on a Weekend this year. Decent rooms (In Reno) Or South Tahoe are going to be expensive and fill quickly. The Sands is far superior to Ghetto Motels along I80. Also Ski Shuttles go directly from Sands to Mt. Rose and Squaw Valley.

BTW all 800 rooms are not near Railroad Tracks, any more so than all of Downtown Reno is near railroad tracks. http://www.sandsregency.com/

Boomtown rooms are on par with other major Hotel Casinos. They are not what I would call competitively priced. The cheaper rooms face I80. Major Truck route and Boomtown is on of the largest Truck Stops in the Country.

PS: really to bad you are not in Reno on a Tuesday. Mt. Rose has a lift ticket deal on Tuesdays called (2fer Tuesdays) 2 lift tickets for the price of 1. (48$) Mt. rose is a good deal anytime but the Tuesday deal just knocks it out of the park.

If you have your heart set on staying inn Reno on the above mentioned dates/ Go to www.reno.com / plug in the dates and select the sands.

Also go to this link and look @ the web links I posted there for the North Shore.

I am not afraid of highway noise(such as Motel 6 next to I80), the windows will insulate it, but the steam Whistle from the train really wakes you up. I have never arrived Sands before 11PM so I guess I always got the leftover rooms (next to the rail). Perhaps you will be lucky if you gets to Sands like 3pm to pick the rooms not facing the rail. One more thing about Sands, the buffet is not on the par with other majors, suggest you eat elsewhere.

South Tahoe?

The wife and I want to go in March. Were looking to do a couple of days at Squaw them a couple of days at Heavenly. She wants to stay near each mtn. Is there any places to stay away from? I see the Blackjack is right across from the heavenly lifts at a REAL cheap price. How big a dive is it?
