Picked up my first pair of skis (Volkl 4star) and wanted to know what type of prep/service is needed before hitting the slopes next season.

Volkl 4 stars need base prep or just a hot wax?

Based on my review of the various discussions on new ski prep, I feel additional tuning is not necessary but have been unable to determine if new Volkl 4 stars require a specific base prep or just a hot was before skiing. Anyone with new Volkl experience?

Generally they will ski "straight out of the box" just fine. Keep an eye on the bases after every use. It is easy to tell when it needs wax. Off hand, I say you will probably want to wax them after the first couple of days, and thereafter wax them every 4 - 5 days for casual, fairly low mileage, recreational skiing.

Wax them before you even take them out. The factory does a good job of tuning the edges and grinding the bases but they do a minimal job with the wax. Use an iron and hot wax them at least once to inpregnate the base material with wax.
