I made the pilgrimage this past Friday. I had very high expectations, and they were fulfilled, and even exceeded.
The usual protocol is to measure your foot length, try on a bunch of boots, pick the one that fits best, then take note of any pressure points.
This shop is so good that we skipped all those steps. Via e-mail I had said that the Dobermann XS seemed ideal for me, since I have a very slender foot yet don’t need typical plug boot stiffness. I probably needed a size 7 UK, since its shell length is 305mm and my current shell is 304.
He took one look at my foot and agreed that the Dobie fit was for me. Put the foot in the shell and agreed on size. Measured my ankle dorsiflexion to ensure that I didn’t need the Soft version instead.
Once the custom footbeds were finished, he marked with lipstick all the bony spots on my foot. Put the foot on the footbed inside the shell and marked where to grind. Then I tried on the boot w/ footbeds & liners - the fit was absolutely perfect, even though I’d never tried on the boot before the mods.
After that was on to stance evaluation, sole planing, and lifters.
Basically two hours of having a boot technician fresh off the World Cup circuit attending to my every need.
The only drawback is now I can’t wait for ski season to start!
