M9, M10 or M11 for me?First post, guys. Be gentle. I have similar questions. I'm probably a level 8 or 9 skier, 44 years old, been skiing since I was 9. I'm 5'9", 185 lbs. I haven't been skiing a lot recently, but with my kids getting into the sport and having access to a place, I'm going up to the hill a lot more these days (North Shore Tahoe to be exact). I grew up back east where I learned to ski ice, but have skied all around Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and everything we have here.
Problem is I'm old-school. Bump skiing is what I like to do primarily, but because of friends and family, I ski in all conditions, Sierra cement, ice, powder, hard pack, crud, groomers. Mostly I ski with a couple buds who are slower skiiers and my kids on the groomers, but I occasionally go off-piste and other times, ski with aspiring racer types who like to bomb the mountain, so I'd like a ski than can do all these things. As for me, I like to take the scenic route, straight down the fall line hitting every bump I can find. I can ski virtually anything, my favorite runs are Scott chute at Alpine, the Nose at Headwall, Granite Chief, the Chutes at Rose, the trees at Diamond Peak when we have good snow. Got some great thigh-high powder this year at Northstar on the back bowls with no-one else around this year in the blizzards we got. I'm thinking about getting a pair of 05 Metrons.
Currently, I'm on K2 Power 5's in 182's circa 1997 or so. They have a little sidecut, but not much. I won't even tell you how old my boots are! I am a fairly powerful skiier due to my weight, size and fitness from other activities, and I've never had problems throwing around longer skis (e.g. 195's/200's). I've been looking at the M10 (or M9) in a 171 size and a M11 in a 162 size (approx. 1260 index). I want to take advantage of the end of season clearances to get a new setup. I know it probably won't be my last set if I start going more, but I'd like something with some float, but will be a good all-around ski and not a huge transition from the old-school equipment I'm on now.
I'm hesitant to get the M:EX's because they're so wide under foot, and am a little put off by the extreme sidecut of the M11. So, I've been leaning towards the M10's. However, the M9's look attractive because of their lighter weight and they're less stiff than the M10's. Seems like a good option for bashing the moguls with my old-school style (parallel skis, knees locked together, blasting off the mogul tops). Other skis I've heard bandied about are the Bandit B2's, and the Legend 4800's.
Thoughts on models and sizing are appreciated. I'd like to demo some, but my options are limited and probably won't get up to the hill again this year to get a full evaluation. While you're at it, lemme know which Neox looks good. Thanks in advance.
