Spell Checker?

Just curious: why no spell checker on the forum? Aren't they cheap, easily-acquired, pre-packaged tools?

For spelling-inept bozos like me, a checker would render merciful relief.

Captain, write you post in your WP (Word or whatever), spell check, cut, paste, post. It will use less bandwidth than an on-line spell checker.

Captain, the problem is, WHAT LANGUAGE? The forum software allows for any language to be used. Even if you say that everyone on here posts in English, well then we need to decide which version of English to use - English, or a bastardisation of it (or should that be bastardiZation?)

Boy, some people are never haapppy.

I use the spelling and grammar as a way to evaluate how much thought and time someone put into their post.

When I am doing a quick reply in the humor section or just making a flippant comment I don't worry about spellin and grammar.

If I am posting a "valuable insight" I vest myself in correct spelling, grammar, word choice, and still wind up editing three times after I post it live.

Stache,

Thank you for posting that. I think it is very clever and demonstrates the importance of maintaining human involvement.

Stache,
I forwarded the verse to the staff at the school at which I teach. We should post it on every computer in the school.

For the record it is NOT my creation. I honestly don't remember where I got it. I have a better one somewhere I just could not locate it.
But as SnoWonder mentioned, computers are great tools until somebody tries to use them to replace human thought and touch.

Stache,

That poem is very clever ... so, I decided to steal it and include it in a proofreading class we offer in my office. It will be interesting to see who can rewrite the poem -- knowing all of the correct words, etc.

Thanks!

You must work with idiots, too!

I hate to say this but, if you cannot spell correctly using an IBM Selectric, you are not an expert skier :

For the record, I cannot spell correctly using a Selectric and I can barely put coherent sentences using MS Word. Therefore I am not an expert skier (really, I am not)

Sorry, I could not resist

It's also amazing how well the human mind can sort out poorly spelled information.

for example..
:

The paomnnehil pweor of the hmuan mnid.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it
deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod
are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and
lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a
total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthitaporbelm.
Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey
lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

Amzanig huh?

It's a FAKE! The "research" was never carried out, but was another one of those Internet stories, that, once it has been forwarded/posted enough, takes on an air of truth...

I tried that and it wanted to download something, so I just use the spell check in the Google toolbar.

The download is pretty innocuous. It's similar technology to the google toolbar.
