The construction (or demolition) of Lionshead will not start in earnest for another couple of weeks. The only part that is going to be demolished is the Vail Resorts office complex, the old gondola building, and the Sunbird Lodge (employee housing). Other than some exterior facade work on other condo buildings, very little other construction is scheduled for Lionshead this summer.
Between now and the end of the season, it won't be bad. Everything will go on as usual. But if you are coming after the season, remember that most of the restaurants and other businesses in town will be closing for the mud-months.
Since there is significant asbestos abatement to be done, they have to remove the building slowly, while removing the asbestos at the same time. The greatest impact will be noise. This will be from the many vehicles and trucks which will be running through the area.
All the employees are already out of the Sunbird, we have to be completely out of our Ski School locker room by the 11th, and the admin offices have to be cleared out by this coming weekend. Most have already moved. The Swiss Hotdog place is moving to the WalMart Center (rumor), and the Fabulous Sundance Saloon is now just a memory. Moe's BBQ has moved up next to DJ's. The Lions Den is closed, as of yesterday, and the remaining businesses have until next weekend to be moved out.
For the next 2 - 2.5 years, this area will be interesting to watch as the new hotel and commercial areas are built.
