Binding Adjustments

I have a slight problem for an upcoming ski trip. All of the shops in my area have stopped their winter ski services. But, I am switching boots for my next ski trip in 2 weeks. At the beginning of the season, I had gotten new boots because my old ones had packed out and I couldn't get to a decent bootfitter. My bindings were adjusted for my new boots' sole length.

Unfortunately, I don't think that I'll be able the get the bindings readjusted back for my old boots which I had "fixed" on a recent trip. My question is: Do I need to worry much if I ski one day on bindings that were set for a 291mm boot with a 294mm boot. The old boot seems to snap into the binding OK. Opinions?

I am not a binding tech, but I would think that, yes, there is a difference. I am assuming that your trip is to a resort, and not to the back country. You can certainly have the bindings adjusted on your arrival, and it will likely cost you very little. I am personnaly rather paranoid about my binding settings, since I have an unnatural aversion to knee surgery (having it, that is- no problems anesthetizing people for it )

You don't say what type of binding it is. With some bindings each adjustment position on the heel covers a range (2-4mm?) rather than being an infinite adjustment to match exactly.

Doh! I forgot to mention that the bindings are 02-03 Marker Piston 1200s or 03-04 Look P12 Lifters. (I had two sets of skis adjusted to the new boots originally, but I prefer the ones with the Marker bindings.) And, I could get the bindings checked on the first morning, but I'd probably have to wait an hour before most of the shops would even open as I will be arriving much too late at night to do it the day before. If it isn't overly dangerous, I would be willing to risk it for a day.

Markers are finicky, the 3mm will make a difference. When I switched out boots, the sole length difference was only 1mm, and when I clicked the new boots into my Markers, the forward pressure was off, so I had to adjust. They are really easy to adjust, do a search and see if you can figure it out yourself.

There's a pretty comprehensive guide to doing it yourself on forskiers.com

I mess with my bindings a lot, Atomic Race 6-14s and Marker Titanium Piston 1200s, and I find that it works best if you keep tightening until the boots wont step in anymore. That could very well be wrong, but mine come off when I need them to and don't come off when I don't want them to (50+ mph). That leads me to believe I'm doing something right!
