Big Sky Conditions?

Anyone know what Big Sky conditions are *really* like? Reading the weather and snow conditions from different sources leads to some inconsistencies.... Thanks.

Today is the 11th day in a row that Bridger Bowl and Big Sky have reported new snow. During this period Bridger, Big Sky & Moonlight have received over 5 feet. The storms are predicted to continue through the weekend.

Generally, the snow has been very good. We have had a couple warmer dumps, though.....basic Tahoe spring powder. It is suppose to cool down through the weekend and snow some every day so we're expecting good powder. One problem at Big Sky is the powder is not getting skied out fast enough on sunny days on remote lifts like Shedhorn. On those days it is best to stay high or in the glade runs. Another option on sunny days is to go to Moonlight which has a more northernly exposure.

Thanks, Rio - that is very helpful! Heading there on Friday with fingers crossed.

kcoleman -

Another 5-7 inches at Big Sky yesterday and it looks like snow each day through the weekend. Today another storm is passing through causing foggy conditions at Big Sky. If you encounter foggy conditions while here be very careful skiing in the Lone Peak Bowl. The tram side of the bowl is very disorienting in flat light and can cause dizziness and vertigo.

Thanks for the warning - I will definitely avoid that. If it's snowing, I won't get up early for the 7 am Easter service on Sunday!

Kcoleman, your timing is good. This winter has been a pretty puny one in terms of total snow fall. It stated snowing here on Sat 3/12 and has only paused for a few hours. I work for Moonlight Basin and we have picked up 60+ inches since the 12th. Today was my first day off since the 12th and I am so exhaused from all the great skiing I had to force myself to take a full day away and pick up on my life, (groceries, laundry etc).

The coverage you will find at Big Sky and the surrounding areas is very very good right now and you are going to have a great trip. When skiing here, bring or rent some mid-fat skis. All the new snow will make it well worth the $$$.

As it is late march, aspect is going to be a big deal in terms of finding good snow. When the sun comes out, the snow gets heavy in a hurry. Stick to more northerly aspects.

Don't forget your goggles and some ibuprophen, your face will hurt from smiling so much.
Please write a Trip Report when you return.
