I think ski preference has a lot to do with user reviews. I enjoy high speed cruising and some racing and don't really have a lot of time on the super sidecut models like the B5. I enjoy wide GS arcs down the fall line and really am not into the moguls and don't do much off piste skiing. My opinion of the B5 performance is probably different than those who have different interests. Also I may not be using the correct technqiues for the B5 as well.
I haven't been on the 9X, so can't comment, but I can certainly see how someone who really likes those two skis would not like skiing the b5 with the same approach.
My personal preference is: powder and cut-up when it can be found (like yesterday at Vail!), steep windpack and other natural conditions, and then groomers to just rip out some carved RR tracks. I'm enjoying bumps more than ever, now (thanks to the ESA and Nolo!), too.
So, as you say, we have different preferences. Depending on how one rides them, though, I do think that the b5s are amazing on very hard snow (dare I say, "ice" when my profile clearly lets it be known that I live in Colorado?!?!). Not an SL racer, but close...
