I was at Sunday River for the very first time on Saturday. I was a bit disappointed. It was crowded as all hell. Lots of snowboarders, lots of dangerous intersections, many skied off areas, and not all that interesting.
I liked it at first, and some trails were nice fast groomers with good snow. There were some nice glades, and a good amount of steep terrain. Lots of whoop-de-doos to get a little air off of while cruising around made for some fun too. But overall I found it 7 peaks of the same stuff, with way too many lunatics skiing way too fast. I never spent so much time looking over my shoulders as I did on Saturday.
The famed White Heat was long, but not as steep as Outer Limits, and I'm sure it was a whole lot icier. The lift system was pretty good, and most lines moved fast. The Bethel area also looked like a total bore as well.
I agree that Sugarloaf is a lot more interesting.
On Sunday we skied Wildcat. Conditions were much better, crowds were far less, and the trails were much more fun to ski.
I avoided Sunday River for years thinking it was probably not worth the trip. I was right about that. I'd be thrilled if it was re-located to the Catskills, but until then I'm going to Wildcat or the Loaf for a long weekend.
