Your first REAL ski/setup? - Page 3

My first skis that I owned, as a young kid, were Blizzard TC23's (not sure if that was the actual model, but it said that on the skis), and some blue Dalbello 3-buckle boots.

First I remember is:

Hexcel Comps
Caber Boots like Ingemar

Memory is very foggy...I was just a kid...My dad got a line on some army surplus skis...either from or just like those used by the 10th Mountain division in the WWII... "Touring" skis with metal edges and everything.
I don't remember any brands, dates or anything about the equipment other than it felt like a "great jump" in technology. It made me feel like I just stepped into the real world of skiing. Probably late 60s.

All in one year I went from cable bindings to step in's, Metal edged skis that I didn't have to move the edges from one pair to another. These were part of the skis, and hard rubber buckle boots.

Prior to this year cable bindings leather buckle boots and wood skis that had "reuseable" metal edges. I do remember helping my dad unscrew and re-attach the edges on my next pair. The leather buckle boots were a step up from 2 years before that we were skiing on leather lace ups.

I probably was a horrible skier having a great time and not knowing any better but it felt great to "graduate" to the new equipment But what does an kid know! In my mind I was the best skier on the mountain!

1986:
Fischer Vacuum SL 200cm
Fischer Vacuum SSL 210cm
Both with Tyrolia 390 bindings
Dachstein Racing boots - neon yellow with neon orange buckles.

I had several setups before this one, but this was my first "top of the line" gear.

My first real skis: (disregarding spending 10 years buying only very used boots and skis)

1989
Boots: Lange (can't remember the model}
Skis: a. Volkl Renntiger 208 cm with Look turntable bindings (really hard to turn, horrible in deep powder, great built for speed skis - took them to Sun Valley, making high speed runs down to Warm Springs base.)
Skis: b. bought same year Dynastar Vertical 197 cm or 198 cm (don't remember which - before the Assault model was brought out) with Salomon bindings

1970 Fischer Alu in 195. Look-Nevada Gran Prix with long thongs and 1970 Lange "pro" boots.

Next were Head "Killy" GS skis that would not turn at all with some Salomon binding I got at a ski swap for 30 bucks. These got sold later (2 years maybe) in the same ski swap for the same 30 bucks.

Then some new bright green Munari??? boots that KILLED my feet and got taken back after one days clomping around my dorm room.

Winter of 1968 had leather/lace boots (Koflach?), bamboo poles and wood skis (Bavaria?) with the screwed in edges and cable bindings. Can't remember for sure who made any of them but I count it as a REAL ski/setup and being my first year of skiing was the first setup as well.
2006:
Head im77
Head mojo 90
Nordica Hot Rod boot
Real ski pants

Been renting LOOOoooong enuff.

K2 XR10s: shiny red topsheets with tiny engraved graphics.

Salomon bindings: I forget the model. You cocked the heel by opening the cover on the back?

Lange boots: The original ones. Basic black with black liner. No flo or nothin'. In a previous thread here, I recently learned that the liners came with pieces you could use to adjust the fit, but I got them used and didn't know anything about that. They either fit or they didn't, and to the extent they didn't, you lived with it (and you lived with the raw skin on your shins too).

Anyway, they seemed pretty real to me at the time. Before that, I had wood skis and leather boots (some with laces: inner and outer).

Circa 1966/1967 - Head 360s, Tyrolia Bindings, the original Lange boots

Killy won his three gold metals in 1968 on Dynamic skis. He was on Head in the 1964 Olympics and started endorsing Head skis after the 1964 World Cup season was over. (Remember, World Cup racers couldn't endorse brands back then.) When he raced professionally in the US during the 70s he used K2s.

1980 (10th grade) K2 610 Comps with Look N57 bindings - crappy boots

1987 - (College graduate) upgraded boots to Dynafit 9S Comp

1988 - Upgraded skis to Rossi 4S

I don't turn over my inventory nearly enough

If it was all silver, it was probably the 444, the most popular binding in its time.
Not my very first setup, but:

Hart Freestyle Honeycomb skis
Hanson Exhibition boots
Burt retractable bindings

Beat that!

I think we have a winner. It doesn't have to be your first setup but your first set that you knew that you made it as a "skier"

The 555 was a defferent heel that had the seperate flap cover. But it could be. The 202/222 (and 101) did have the same (basic) heel as the 444 though.

Those were the days

First set up: 1961 (3 y/o)
wood skis, leather toe wrap binding (free heel like snowshoe binding), street boots

First real set up: 1963
wood skis w/screw-on edges, cable bindings, leather lace ups

First metals: ~ 1966/67
Head JR90's, Salomon S-JR step-ins "flap backs", Caber (?) leather buckles

First memorable set up: 1969
Dynamic VR17 SL (177cm), Look Nevada turntable, Lange Comp w/ jet stix riveted on
All bought at Gorsuch Vail mid-season sale
First time I really could "take" my father when we raced - not everytime, but gratuity-time was over.

Wow, what a long time ago. Let's see....

71/72?

205 cm Olin Mark II V.C.E
Nordica Astral Slalom (foam injected, the original yellow Banana Boot)
Salomon 555, fully pre-releasable bindings (I hated those things)
Scott poles of some kind.

Actually, before the Olins, I had some Yamaha All Round III's that were pretty hot skis (almost gagged typing that) in 205 cm that I got when I was 12 years old and all of 5'-4" tall. I really thought they ripped!
