We got back saturday from a week long trip to the Boat. I don't think we could have hit it at a worse time. Spring like conditions all week. I am beginning to think our group is jinxed when it comes to getting snow.
We had to deal w/ freeze thaw conditions all week. Really the only place where good snow could be found was the Ridge, and off of North St. Pats/East Face.
My thoughts on the Boat:
I think this mountain would be very different with lots of snow. Having said that here are a few things I did NOT like about the mountain.
I was very dissapointed in the lack of groomers with a consistant pitch. Becides Buddies Run, Teds Ridge (when it is groomed), storm peak, and a few others most of the blue groomers are VERY flat. The blue groomers off of the sunshine and sundown lifts should have been classified as green runs.
I was also very dissapointed in the terrain off of moringside lift. Other than the first bit of vertical off the lift the terrain is VERY flat.
I found several good bump runs and i'm sure there would be more if I had been able to ski the lower mountain (very very crusty all week long).
Made a total of 2 runs down pioneer ridge all week due to the very icy/crusty conditions. This place would be great with snow.
I enjoyed the terrain in the chutes/ridge/north st pats/east face area but there is not much vertical. The runs are very short and difficult to access. A new lift is needed on this this side of the mtn badly. Skiing this terrain requires a ride up stormpeak and morningside lift or a long hike from the top of stormpeak.
I really liked the town and the people. We ate at the smokehouse (very good) and watched some acc basketball games at the Tap house (nice atmosphere).
John at one stop ski shop was also very helpful and a wonderful bootfitter. Highly recommended.
Overall, a good trip considering the terrable snow conditions. I would not book a trip in advance again. I would only want to return via the last minute when they were getting the goods. Due to the flat groomers I was bored after a few days given that there was no new snow thus limiting my choice of terrain.
On a very bright note the crowds at this place are non existant. Not once did i have to wait in a lift line...not even the gondola
Thanks for your help lars....hopefully i can return to the boat one day for a few days when they are getting good snow and see what it is really all about.
