Many fine athletes don't reduce their training and even the race to an outcome. Many coaches encourage there racers to stay focused on the race not the outcome. I think he cares alot and he keeps his focus on the part that he can control - his race.
He seems to have a mature approach to racing. I would even say a spirtual approach. To me it's a winning attitude.
