make my own SL lifter?

I know that it won't compare in terms of flex and performance, but in a pinch (excuse my ignorane on the subject, I only just switched from straights to sidecuts) could I, as a welder, make a lifter plate with a plate of Stainless steel and a drill press for the binding mount screws? Just put a half inch peice of plate between the binding and ski?
Thanx in advance?
p.s. I am NOT considering doing this to my new Beta Carv's, just thinking about using a set of older, yet still indemnified markers on a set of seconhand carvers.

That sounds pretty heavy and some lifters can be had pretty cheap.

If I just had the urge to make my own, I'd go to a plastics supply house and look at some of the high strength nylon block/board they sell ....... how high do you wanna be? : :

I was thinking of doing a similar thing. My Marker binding heels are 4mm higher than the toes. I need to be on a flat binding for a better alignment. Maybe I could machine a lifter out of plastic to angle me back to neutral. I would just have to mill a piece of aluminum or plastic down to the angle I needed. It wouldn't be that hard. It would be cost effective beacuse I could make exactly what I need. Marker sells shims but they are expensive.

I've thought about the idea at length and even designed one on a CAD system but never executed it. The purpose of the lifters I designed was to lift the binding AND level it. Since most bindings of today provide forward ramp angle (heel is thicker than toe under the boot) I wanted to make my toe lifter thicker than the heel lifter. Following are a few of my comments on home cooking a lifter.

Aluminum would be a better material than stainless (strong plastics may be best). Pay attention to the fastening method. I believe it would be better to mount the plates to the skis then the bindings to the plates rather than through bolt (vibration isolation). Also, I would suggest a lifter of two pieces per ski (one under toe, other under heel) rather than one piece per ski.

I fabricated a 4mm lifter plate for only my front Rossie Axial out of plate aluminum to solve a alighnment problem. Rossie makes a 4mm plate but it is not designed to be stacked on top of the existing riser. I then had to shorten real long screws so they were just 4mm longer than the original one cuz they don't make them the right length for my setup. Works great.

I am with Yuki on this one and have myself made several lifters using Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene Plastics (called UHMW plastics). I went to a plastics manufacturer and they let me grab all the material I wanted from their remnants bin for free. In my opinion, a solid aluminum plate of 4mm thickness would be much too stiff if made to lift both the toe and heel piece with one plate. Although this is done with a Deflex plate, it is made of aluminum as a sandwich construction integrated with rubber and is quite flexible for its thickness. I suppose that individual solid aluminum lifters under the toe and heel pieces would work.

Someone mentioned that lifters are pretty cheap. I have a Deflex plate for sale and some other lifters that may work so PM me to let me know what you need if interested.

Seems to me a half inch plate would create a much bigger dead space in the arc of the ski. Whadaya think?

Thanks for the replies! After reading all of what you wrote, I concluded teh S.S. would indeed be too heavy and that I will go with the plastic; especially since I do work with that fairly often. I was thinking about 10 mm of lift. thanx heaps!! [img]smile.gif[/img]
