I have skied on older Salomon bindings for years and never noticed a problem until now. After reading a post regarding the toe wings coming lose I checked the three sets of skis I have Salomon bindings on. None are older than 2 or three years and all have the single screw adjustment on the wings. I have 2 sets of 912ti bindings and a set of 914 FIS bindings. One pair of 912ti bindings is brand new that I had put on my new Dynastar Legend 8000 skis (I am disgusted over that one). I also looked at an older dismounted pair of S900 Equipes and noticed they have a screw on each side unlike the newer bindings. I was appalled at what I found when I examined the newer bindings. I had only a few partial days on my 8000s and yet the play in the toe was almost 0.25" (±0.125" side to side). The same was true of my other pair of 912ti bindings on a pair of K2 Axis-Xs that I use as bump skis. My 914 bindings had a little more than 0.125" play in the toe also. When adjusting the wings back I noted the running torque of the screws was very low, not what I would have expected for this kind of adjustment. I recently noticed that my Axis-X skis felt a little funny and unstable but wrote it off to a bad day on my part. I wonder how many releases were due to lose toe wings and not due to my skiing. I believe that this is a serious problem and people should be complaining to Salomon. I no longer have the confidence that these bindings are protecting me. At the very least they should not require such frequent adjustment. I find this situation unacceptable and I don’t like the Locktite band aid either. This defect represents a single point failure mechanism in the link between my body and my skis. I intend to junk these bindings and use another brand but I am worried about mounting hole pattern overlap if I change manufacturers. As an aerospace engineer I know a little bit about design and manufacturing problems and it bothers me that a company could leave a product on the market with this level of defect. I bet if I mounted one of these bindings on a vibration table and set the power spectral density of the vibration frequencies and levels to match those of a ski on snow I could get the screws to back out, but that is the kind of thing Salomon should be doing to confirm this problem.
