Congrats to Bode; Shame on America
Every time Bode or Daron takes yet another medal, I'm thrilled to death. Here we have, for the first time, serious contendenders for the title of "Best Skiier in the World" right from America's own soil, rather than the snows of Austria, France, or Italy. Furthermore, they're fun guys... how many other athletes do you think would end a post-gold medal speech with "Let's go have a beer!"
And yet America stays solidly focused on ego-swilling football players and fan-punching basketball players. That speaks volumes about our national attitude... if it doesn't take place within our borders, we don't care. Football is played with an oblong ball, basketball is played with a rectangular lane, and all racecars only turn left.
I try to talk up "other" sports to my friends, like FIS. And I try to keep a steady flow of commentary and updates on my blog, hoping to get some folks interested. But I'm afraid we're fighting a losing battle...
