I have a pair as do several other instructors at Copper. I have owned 5 Stars also. Bent them both in deep moguls.
: Garts replaced the F5's and Volkl replaced the 5 Stars.
Sold the 5* replacement and kept the F5.
I still have my F5's and use them regularly for the frontside and teach on them too, alternating with my Fischer WC SC. They are better for firmer days though and would be a great everyday eastern ski for experts. If I recall I only paid about $125-150 at Garts in late 2003 on sale with a $50 discount coupon. Some of the guys at Copper liked them so much they bought an extra pair or two at that price.
Comparing the two, the F5's are stiffer and less versatile than the 5*. The F5 is more like a detuned slalom and you can really get some edge angles and arc turns with them. They like to go fast too.
A really fun front side ski but pretty demanding, they will punish you if you get in the back seat and somewhat stiff for bumps, but will work if you stay centered and smooth. Will crush crud, but are work in deeper than 6-8" of soft stuff. The 5 Stars are more forgiving. Enjoy them!!
Make sure the serial numbers match and that the bases aren't cracked from age drying. They were probably produced in 2001-2002 and were'nt available in the US as current production at that time.
