Which do you prefer with Volkl: 724 EXS or 724 EXT

I have an old pair of Rossignal straight line skis, size 193 that are about ten years old. My ski level intermediate to advance. I mostly ski on blues and a few blacks. I live in Ohio and ski two or three times a year, if the weather is good. Once in a while I ski in Seven Springs. Next weekend I will be going to Holiday Valley. I am looking to buy a new pair of skis. I have narrowed down to two models: Volkl 724 EXS or 724 EXT. I have been to two shops and both recommended Volkl 724 EXT in a 163. They say the 724 EXS requires more work and will be faster. They also said because I never had a pair of these new type of skis, the EXT would be better. Is there a big difference between them both? Which one do you think would fit me better. Also what size, 163 or 170? I weigh 185lb and I am 5'6 1/2.

Baukerman, I hired a pair of Volkl 724 EXP over 4 days last winter in Oz. I loved the stability at speed, the way they carved and held an edge but found them a little hard going with quick edge to edge changes. The skiing was mostly spring skiing on groomed runs (ice > soft > slush > chopped up crud > chopped up ice) and some off piste. I am looking at trying the Volkl 724 EXS next, it is slightly narrower overall and should be easier to link quick turns. BTW, I am 6'1" & 195lbs and usually ski a 177cm in carve skis.

I was new to carve skis last season and was not used to the wider stance and the way these new skis carve rather than slide through turns. It is definitely worth getting lessons to learn how to ski these new skis as the technique is different.

Thanks Taxman.

Keep me posted as to what you think about the EXS.

Baukerman, sorry I wont be able to report back to you until around July. Mind you, had an epic surf at Bondi yesterday, a solid 10' on the sets.

Best advice if you can, is to demo over a couple of days, that way you can be sure of what you are getting, rather than handing out your hard-earned on an unknown. Also make sure to take some lessons on the technique for getting the most out of carve skis. Once you got the hang of these new skis, you'll wonder how you ever skied those old long skinny sticks.
