Shocked!

I'm disappointed, surprised and chagrined that my Sex and Skiing poll was shut down today by DChan. I really can't believe it. You may not like the substance of the poll, but I found the results fascinating and no more useless than countless – and I mean countless – other threads I see, some of which are on the General forum at this moment. My poll had everything to do with skiing. I resent the notion that somehow, because it involves something less concrete (ie, one’s values), it somehow ranks as “fluff.” What a stupid idea!

This is the second time one of my threads has been shut down for reasons which would have been fairly impossible to predict in advance by reading the “terms and conditions.” The first – a request for a “blacklist” of ski resorts, ski manufacturers, tourism authorities, etc. which have made significant contributions to the GOP – was deemed too “political.” I was “hurting the community,” I inferred. I was asked to repost it in the Supporter’s lounge. I decided it was bad idea to begin with and let it go. What’s ironic is that even one of the most die-hard Republicans on the site that I know of, HarvardTiger, had offered a reasoned, interesting response to that previous thread. I was touched and inspired by his willingness to debate a topic which, I still believe, is worthy. Partisan politics and the ski industry ARE are deeply intertwined, and if you don’t know that, you’re in a dream world. Barring “politics” from the skiing forums is one thing; barring political discussion AS IT RELATES TO SKIING is another. But I accepted that judgment to close that thread, and that's that.

But with this shut-down, well, I’m frankly confused. What wimps!

Perhaps I’m just not right for the “Epic Community.” I’m not going to demean myself by trying to change myself to fit in. I was attracted to Epic because it seemed to offer a broad-tent forum about the sport. My view of Epic is diminished by the shut-down today, and the monitoring is starting to seem petty, craven and controlling, just another exclusive “insider’s club” for skiers. As if there aren't enough of those already! Maybe Gonzo’s suggestion that I move to “Paula’s” ain’t such a bad idea.

I have learned a lot and I utterly respect the knowledge, experience and wisdom of most members. There are a few people whose opinions seem pretty toxic, immature and stupid to me, but I accept them, too, and benefit from engaging with some of them. Any public online forum gets its share of headcases and sociopaths. From the dozens of threads I have started on Epic, I can’t help but notice that not a few of them seem to get many replies and views. I have had tons of positive feedback. Sure, there are some moaners in those replies, but the vast majority of the replies are “on-point” – participatory and not regulatory in nature.

The terms and conditions for Epic posts read: “You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, hateful, harassing, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violates any law. You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by EpicSki.”

Uh, get a grip.

AC, dchan and company do all of us a huge service by running EpicSki. There are many commercial sites that do a far worse job for their customers. Part of the site's success comes from making it a big tent - a big tent focused on skiing. Politics in the skiing forums detracts from this - and tends to get shut down. Sexual content often suffers the same fate. Again, for good reasons. Personally, I'm not bothered by sexual content, discussions, etc. However, many people are - and many of these people have something to offer on the skiing side of things.

In the time I've been here, I've been very impressed with how the admins have walked this line. Certain topics tend to spiral into content or wording that many find disturbing or that polarize the community over issues that have nothing to do with skiing. I don't understand how you demean yourself, or how you are in any way demeaned, when the admins use their judgement - and ask you to comply with it in this arena. They have a fair bit of experience managing the site - and they are the ones who receive complaints on specific posts and threads. (Oh, they also tend to do a good job of keeping their own topic specific biases out of their decisions as well).

I do understand that you might disagree with the "house rules". If so, you can always try Paula's or TGR. I suspect you'll enjoy the latter a bit more . Neither sexual content nor political content will make anyone bat an eyelash over in Maggot-land.

BTW - this is hardly the first time this discussion has come up. You may find the following interesting:

http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=18286
(sorry for anyone not a supporter, but I think you need to ante up to read this one)

Also, as you presumably know, the rules tend to be a bit looser in the Lounge.

Cheers!

Oh yeah - like I said, in my experience, the admins tend to keep their own feelings and biases out of these decisions. If I ran the site and some newcomer called me a "wimp", well... I'd probably blow their account away. But then I don't have the reputation of being the ultimate patient guy when it comes to this sort of thing - so I guess AC will probably never ask me to be an admin

Spare me your patronizing, world-weary wisdom.

And I'd consider getting my account "blown away" a badge of honor. So blow right away, Epic!

If we blew away every person's account that called us a name, there would not be a whole lot of us left.

I try to be hands off as far as censoring but if I get complaints I get to try to walk a thin line. Often it's too much trouble to sift and edit all the individual posts so a whole thread will get deleted or closed. If it looks like a thread is headed towards a bad situation closing the thread allows me to leave the content (not delete) and preserve some of the good stuff. If it gets to far gone, everything in the thread goes away. Good and bad.

wbroun I understand your frustration, i found the question an interesting one. however you're really overreacting here. this is a moderated community, not an anarchy. your first post above makes some decent points, but name calling, and considering being thrown out of here a "badge of honor" is rediculous.

Taking that comment seriously the only logical response is to suggest you close your account as you would be so honored to lose it. be proactive.

Taking that comment as just your anger overflowing causes me to suggest you try to calm down here. you've posed some interesting questions on this forum, but being such a new member (as I am pretty new too) is like moving to a town and becoming one of the most vocal members at the Town Meetings, which in a way you have been with your plethora of polls - it's alienating. there is nothing demeaning about trying to join a group a bit gingerly.

chill man. you've got a lot to add here, you don't have to do it all at once.

I'm shocked... I mean SHOCKED!!!!!! that you're shocked.

I think you're taking all this a little too seriously.

But your shock has been noted for the record.

Take the day off, hell, take two days off. No one will care about it in the morning. The threads you started will linger and we won't forget about you if you don't post 12.4 times per day. Cool out eager beaver.

Well dammit, I'm shocked that you're shocked that I'm SHOCKED!!! If there's any more shock around here, someone's going to need an IV.

I'll get over it.

I do hope this wasn't an open letter, or Irul is going to be all shocked too.

The shock that keeps on giving.

Shock wave.

Pass the cheese, my cup overflowth with whine.

Thought for the day: Open your own ski forum and show us all how much better and more reasonable it is than awful board filled with petty, shallow poseurs we really are. Or just keep whining. It's a bit funny for a while but it doesn't wear very well.

With all the shocking stuff going on, do we need to hire an electrician?

Downgrade the Shock to "merely miffed".
Perhaps we could have a poll on whether wbroun should be allowed to post any more polls....!!!...

or would this be another shockingly flawed poll??

If you find yourself getting a resentment send me a private message and I work with you on it. There is a purpose to all of this and sometimes we step over the line. Nothing personal was intended.

Hey thanks, Paul. No, this hasn't hardened into a resentment, at least I don't think so. I needed for myself to express my unhappiness with Dchan's decision and that's what I did. I really try hard not to post things online that I wouldn't say to someone's face, BTW -- ie, flaming. In most ways, I don't keep my online identity separate because, and again, this is for me personally, that could lead to some spiritually "effed-up" behavior. But if posting often seems like being "domineering" to others, I'm willing to look at that. That said, it's clear you can't please everyone. But I can't afford resentments these days. I appreciate your post a great deal and may PM you anyway!

Yeah, and it was in grade school that I learned that "alot" was two words ...

Hey, school paste wasn't so bad if you had brown crayons with it.

Those were not crayons.
