I have been taught that those barking spiders are more bothersome at altitude. They attack us flat(er)landers more frequently because our digestive systems are still adjusting to the lower atmospheric pressures.
If you remember high school physics - gases expand with lower pressure. The expanding gas in the gut has to go SOMEwhere - so that brings on the call of the barking spider
As an aside..... one time we took MRE's (military food rations) along on a backpacktrip down into the Grand Canyon. As I opened my packet of beanies and weenies I noticed that it had stamped all over it in big letters.... CAUTION!!!NOT FOR IN-FLIGHT/PRE-FLIGHT USE!!!!! After I thought about it , the lightbulb finally went off and I realized that I sure wouldn't want to undergo rapid depressurization after a meal of refried beans ----OUCH!
