"Hot Dog" "Freestyle" The old school... - Page 12

Didn't mean to imply that you did .  I just remember him as being quite a "character".  Hopefully someone else on here knows a little more about his freestyle career for you.  I'll ask some of my friends who were part of the freestyle scene back then.  I am guessing that he was competeing in the 70's sometime.

When I read that name in your post it jogged my good memories of skiing the Argentiere Glacier with some of his guys, thanks.

Hi Carla - I'm gayle sanders' daughter!  Fun to find you on here.  I'm reaching out to people who know Nick and Suzi Preston and have been touched, moved and inspired by their 30 years of commitment and service to Waterville Valley and/or Freestyle Skiing.  Those may want to join us this weekend on Saturday, August 7th from 4-10pm at the Waterville Valley Academy, 86 Boulder Path Road, Waterville Valley, NH to honor and celebrate Nick and Suzi.  It is an outdoor BBQ with presentations including a proclamation from the Governor, video (including vintage footage), lots of photos, and games, cost is $25pp at the “door”.

Some examples of the amazing contributions Nick and Suzi have made to Freestyle Skiing and the Waterville Valley community:

  • For the past 30 years, Nick and Suzi Preston have made a significant impact to winter sports, in particular skiing, and in more specifically, freestyle skiing, in New Hampshire and the world.
  • Their commitment to freestyle skiing contributed to freestyle skiing being added to the Olympic program in 1992 for moguls, aerials in 1994, and ski cross in 2010.
  • The Prestons joined Waterville Valley Black and Blue Trail Smashers (WVBBTS) in Waterville Valley, NH, in 1980, one of the oldest ski club in the America (which started in the 1930s) and have created what has become one of the finest freestyle programs in the United States.
  • Nick and Suzi are largely responsible for WVBBTS Ski Club being named USSA Freestyle Program of the Year in 1999, 2004 and 2009.
  • The Preston’s freestyle program boasts 1998 Olympic Gold Medalist in Aerials, Nikki Stone and 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist in Moguls, Hannah Kearney; numerous members over the years on the US Freestyle Skiing Team; more than 12 Junior Olympic gold medals, 8 silver, 5 bronze in 2008 and 2009; an alumni named Ski Racing Junior Freestyle Skiers of the Year and one named Ski Racing Female Freestyle Skier of the Year.
  • Nick and Suzi own and operate Freestyle America Ski Camp in Campton, NH, Lake Placid, NY and Whistler, BC since they founded it in 1983.
  • Nick and Suzi are the proprietors and hosts of Mountain Fare Inn since 1983 in Campton, NH.
  • Nick Preston is Program Director for WVBBTS Freestyle, a USSA Level 3 Certified Coach, and PSIA certified; and received 5 National Coaching Awards, including 2002 USSA Domestic Coach of the Year, 2002 US Olympic Committee Freestyle Coach Award and the Russell Wilder Award in 2006.
  • Suzi Preston is a former freestyle competitor, USSA Coach, operates Mountain Fare Inn and has been creating and managing Freestyle America Ski Camp operations.

Thanks!

Really?? No one?? I was hoping someone could fill in a few names. Frankie Bare in the air. Jack Taylor (no kidding) and Schoenberger and I am assuming the 4 smaller figures are representative of real women. I am not as familiar with the women. The smallest figure may be a man.

I'm guessing the woman on the far left is Suzy Chaffee.

I really don't know, but based on this article, I'll guess that the woman second from right is Joanie Teorey.

If anyone is interested. Greg published a bit of a 'how to' freestyle book in 1978 full of great pictures and a bit of history.  It is 9x11, hardback, 125 pages. I bought several of them and the spines have never been cracked. Very good price. Go to skibay and search Greg Athans. I have no affiliation.

The picture of Joanie in the article is a pretty good match. If someone forced me to guess, I would have said Suzy Chafee on the left but  another source has this as the line-up. Left to right:  Penelope Street, Genia Fuller, Schoenberger, Brooksbank, Suzy Chafee, Bob Salerno. If that is Salerno, it has to be the worst artistic rendering ever, of anybody.

How about Lincoln instead of Brooksbank and Scott Willingham instead of Salerno?

I'm thinking the 'woman' on the far right is Jan Bucher.

This is wild.... I just found out that John Eaves, six-time world champion freestyle skier and the stunt skier in the James Bond films, lives two streets over from me.  What's even wilder is that last year's World Cup Super-G Champion, Erik Guay, moved in a few streets over from me in the opposite direction, last summer.  I feel like I'm surrounded by Royalty.

left to right: ?, ?, Alan Schoenberger, Scott Brooksbank, Joannie Teorey, Bob Salerno. The last three seem to be drawn from 1976 photos by Susan (Huff) Morning.

I have had a suggestion that the women 2nd from left could be Carrie Ballard (sp) although the recollection was that she was an aerialist.

It's been a very long time since I've posted anything on "...The Old School". First, what Brian Gimore is doing is very cool. I've been talking and corresponding with Brian for a year or so now, and I had the privilege of spending a day with him in Santa Monica when he interviewed Michael Grazier, Genia Fuller, Scott Willingham, Rusty Taylor, Kathy Brock, Bob Salerno, and Doug Pfeiffer for Dog Days. I am looking forward to seeing something when Brian has time put a teaser or trailer together.

A couple years ago I sent out limited number of DVDs of Winter Equinox, a feature-length documentary Bill Burks and I made of John Clendenin, Ed Ferguson, Bob Salerno, and Roger Evans competing on the 1974 IFSA Freestyle Pro Tour. As I wrote in earlier posts, the picture and sound source from which I based the DVDs I sent to readers of Epic Ski was a faded and beat-up 35mm print. It was in bad shape, and the resulting DVDs, in spite of doing some work on the picture and sound, didn't look or sound much better.

Bill Burks died in 2009. In November 2010 his daughter sent me a 16mm Kodachrome print of WE I made from the original Ektachrome footage we ran through the cameras in 1974, and a 16mm full coat magnetic WE soundtrack. In short, they are picture and sound sources I hoped to have since I started the Winter Equinox restoration project in 2006. They are several orders of magnitude improved over what I worked with prior to Bill's daughter generously allowing me to use them as a new basis for the project.

WE is now in a high definition digital uncompressed file, and we hope to show an 'intermediate' version of it at Bernie Weischel's event in Sun Valley. The version of WE in the 16mm print and soundtrack is the original R-rated edit, and to my knoweldge, has never been shown publically. If we show it in March, it will be a slightly tightened up version, but without removing any of the honest, 'that was the way it was' content that earned us our R rating, but gave viewers a feeling for Freestlyle in the early -mid 1970s. It has some great footage of the skiers talking about the tour and the competition, and of course, some great skiing.

Without exception, the people to whom I sent DVDs a year or so ago responded positively to our little movie. Depending on what we see and hear in Sun Valley, and if we can overcome some legal hurdles, we may embark on a limited Winter Equinox distribuion via the internet. We'll see.

In the meantime, stay tuned to Brian Gilmore, True Grit Productions, and Dog Days. For those who are planning to attend Sun Valley, Brian plans on being there, and hopefully I'll be there as well. I hope to see you in March, and I'll keep Epic Ski readers posted on our little ski movie.

In the last week I got to spend time with John Clendenin, Wayne Wong, Mike Hattrup and Greg Stump, all legends in this thread. I did come across the following video that is a ton o' phun.

Phil,

It's good to be back. I appreciate the kind words you've shared regarding Winter Equniox and am excited about how much interest there is in the early days of Freestyle. I hope to be able to be at Sun Valley if and when WE is shown. Many of the people who will be there are in it, but have never seen it. Hopefully our little film and people like Brian Gilmore will properly address the growing interest in the era it depicts, and will help people who weren't there to experience what is was like back in the day.

Last year I received an email from a 24 year old who lives in Whistler. He wrote that Glen Plake showed WE to him and that he watched it 10 times during the 7 days he spent with Glen. He asked me for a DVD so he could analyze some of the trick & ballet moves the competitors performed in WE. It's nice that something we shot 37 years ago has content that resonates with enthusiasts today...enthusiasts who are the about same age we were when we made WE. Our 27 year old son was 22 when he first saw it. His comment was that with exception of their clothes, the skiers in WE are exactly like the boarders of today.

I mentioned that I sent a limited number of DVDs so I could get reactions. They were positive. Now that I have a good copy of it in a high resolution digital form, I can concentrate on getting it to look and sound as good, if not better, than it did when Bill Burks and I finished it in 1976. So I won't be sending any more out until then. I have cancer, and at this moment the jury is out on whether the cancer or I will win the battle. But one thing is for sure...I'm going to get WE out there for all to see and enjoy before the lights go out.

Let's stay in touch. Rock On!

Chuck

I am really looking forward to it, Chuck. Keep up the good fight!
