Knee Braces

Which type of knee braces has anyone used in the past or still using .Good/Bad,comfortable or not and reasons for use. I'm needing a good brace but it needs to be comfortable and able to be flexed for all types of terrain. Sounds like a miracle brace but you never know!

I used a CTI2 after my ACL was rebuilt. I got rid of it after 1.5 years, but worked like a champ when I needed it

Before you decide you need to ski with a brace, talk to your orthopedist. A brace, no matter how snugly fit is still holding on to soft tissue and in a sudden movement in one direction or another, that soft tissue can move and compress dramatically, allowing the underlying joint to move far enough that the presence of the brace may provide your knee with little or no real protection from lateral or hyperextensive movements. In fact a brace can provide a false sense of security. The best line of defense is good rehab, flexibility and muscular support. After that, one option is what I've chosen, a neoprene brace with a few coil springs that run the length of each sode of the knee and a cutout that helps keep the patella positioned. It offers some muscular support, keeps the joint warm and it's presence keeps me mindful. It won't prevent another injury *either* but it does a few *useful* things a hinged brace would not...

braces are indeed potential sources of false sense of security, but that's the case only with reckless athletes who don't even stop to think about their injury nor what it means to their fitness.

the BREG is the best brace available right now. it's a refinement of the Don-Joy, created by the same guys that created the Don-Joy, and is low-intrusion. you don't notice it's on your leg.

the "derotation" and "positive stop" aspects of ACL bracing are real and helpful. however, they are NOT a substitute for proper rehab and strong surrounding skeleto-muscular tissues.

I have used the 2d generation Lenox-Hill (the 1st gen was the one designed for Joe Namath), the Townsend, and the BREG. My orthopod focuses on knee reconstruction and rehab, and helps athletes exclusively. He tested a variety of braces for use with his patients and found the BREG to be the best for minimizing "false security" and intrusion and maximizing the likelihood that the wearer will use it correctly.

friends have used Don-Joy and CTi braces without much complaint.

Yep, that's the brace I have and used during rehab. I don't think it will do diddly for derotation when it really matters. I don't think it will do *enough* for positive stop. I sure know when I have it on.

I don't think yours was fit too well, then. mine is vastly superior to anything I ever have tried or had custom molded.

or maybe your anatomy is uniquely unfittable?

also, what other braces have you used? my comments were relative ones. the Lenox-Hill brace changed me from being the fastest and quickest guy on my lax team to one of the medocre ones. my leg muscles would pump up extra fast on the braced leg. that means my stamina went to hades, too.

the Townsend was an improvement but still required tight strapping to keep it put. its positive stop was superior to the Lenox Hill's too.

the BREG is better than the Don-Joy's I have had fit to my knee (I didn't even accept the Don-Joy, as it was too cumbersome and didn't do anything -- much like you described your experience with BREG), and much better than the Townsend or Lenox-Hill.

I had my ACL rteplaced last February and now have 6 ski days in with my Donjoy Defiant. I love it. I was very apprehensive about skiing again, and about skiing in the brace, and after my first run with it on, I forgot it was there. It has a very positive stop 20 deg. short of full extension (this is adjustable), the idea being to prevent the tibia from being pulled forward while the femur is fixed, which is how I tore my ACL -- the "phantom foot" injury. You don't want to tear the repair, because a re-repair is pretty tricky, what with big holes drilled in your femur and tibia. It's on my right leg, and my turns to the left are now better than to the right.
