Tahoe to Kirkwood

Can you get there from SLT this winter? Looks like Luther Pass is closed. The maps I've seen are a bit unclear as to my options to get to Kirkwood from SLT. I'm going to be mighty disappointed if I can't ski there. There must be a way. Thanks.

Cal Hwy 89 is open from US50 to Hwy 88 providing access to Kirkwood (Distance 36 miles from Stateline, NV). From South Lake Tahoe to Kirkwood, take US50 to 89 South to 88 West over Carson Pass. You are correct that Monitor Pass is closed as it is every year. Luther Pass was closed during the last storm, but reopened on Tuesday this week. An electronic sign near the intersection of US50 and Hwy 89 advises of any road closure, chain control or hazard warnings. Normally, a pretty easy and scenic trip.

By the way, make reservations at Sorensens Mountain Resort (800 423-9949 for an exceptional dinner after skiing. It is located just south of the intersection of 89 and 88 in Hope Valley on your right. http://www.sorensensresort.com/about&map.html

Monitor pass closure only affects you if you want to go to Mammoth, and the work-around is to take Kingsbury Grade (Nevada 207) to US 395 in Gardnerville. 89 is also clossed 5 miles north of US 50 to Bliss State Park preventing you from reaching North Lake Tahoe on the West shore. You can take the East Shore (US 50 to CA 29 past Incline) to go North.
