Snowshoe in the spring

I am going to Snowshoe the week of March 22. Was wondering if anyone had an idea of what conditions typically are like that time of year. I understand they closed last April w/ everything open. I know that is a bit iffy this year. BTW, new to the forum and thanks in advance for your replies.

Matt1960, Have been to Snowshoe many times during "Almost Heaven" periods and have experienced everything from rain to major dumps( for the east that is) last year got 8". Anyway, I think we are due for some good skiing type weather. I will say however, do not expect the best in service or ammenities at this time because the resort is getting ready to close for the season and unfortunately the staff is in the same mode. Skiing however, can be great or dismal depending.

Yeah it all depends on how things shape up over the next 2 months. I found skiing at Silver creek a bit better (higher up less crowded). The main mountain gets nasty at the bottom

O yeah the best skiing is to be done in the morning get to the slopes early

Hopefully Mother Nature will right herself for the rest of the winter. Seems as if the majority of our cold weather down(Alabama) here has been coming in the spring the past several years.

Snowshoe usually gets a late burst of snow for some reason in early April. I remember in college, and maybe a year or two afterwards we would always head up there for closing day, and for about 3 or 4 straight years it seemed, it always snowed.

In normal years, and even sometimes in bad years they usually close with everything at Snowshoe open - Silvercreek closes earlier than Snowshoe. But this year is looking a bit different. At that point of the season though, things start to get really uncrowded, so even if some of the runs are closes it should not be too bad.

The way the Mid Atlantic's weather is this year...I wouldn't (personally) pre book anything in March or late March. I'd expect nothing but mud by March this year.

Last year they closed the Western Territory (i was actually the last non-ski patrol person down it last year) and Silver Creek the same weekend, a week before the rest of the mountain closed. Mountain wasn't in great shape that time of year till about 5 inches fell before the final weekend. And as a former employee of snowshoe, i concur that you won't get good service at the end of the year, cause everyone is on cruise control.

I was at Snowshoe on March 18-19 a season or two ago (during a big snow storm) The lift tickets were of course cheaper! However, there were some slopes with bald spots. However, the coverage wasn't too bad and I did have fun. I'd say wait and see what the weather is like.

Depends. I was up there last season for the 3rd to last weekend and it sucked pretty hard. Can't remember when exactly it was, but it rained and they only had 28 trails open, of which there was flowing rivers underneath!

We're booked regardless. Can still cancel w/in 21 days for not too stern a penalty. Hopefully February and March will make up for December and January. It appears by looking at their website, they cater to spring breakers and are somewhat dependent upon them, especially this year. Hopefully they will realize the importance of these last few weeks of the year. If not, then I won't return.

Maybe this is good news from the farmers Almanc

November through early February will be milder than normal, with below-normal snowfall. But winter will be relentless from mid-February into early April, with exceptionally cold temperatures and frequent snow the rule. The coldest periods will be early to mid-November, mid-January, and from early February through mid-March. Late February and early March will be especially cold. The snowiest periods will be early December, early to mid-February, and from late February to mid-March.

I stayed at the Inn at Snowshoe at the bottom of the mountain. The prices were pretty reasonable. If you don't want top spend too much money and don't mind a 5-10 minute drive to the top, it is a good choice. It is not the fanciest, but like I said the price is good. They also have a pool and hot tub there.
Have a fun trip

We are staying at Mountain Lodge which I believe is on the east side of central village. There are three families going, 14 people in all.

The youngest in our group is 5. My daughter is 11 and my son is 18 and a senior in high school. We have a pretty eclectic group and would very much like to say hello when we are there. A good majority of our group are first timers and will be in lessons, so perhaps we could make a few runs. Just hope the weather for the next 6 weeks cooperates. BTW, we arrive the 22nd.
