Powder Day at Sierra - What 18 Feet Looks Like

Enough talk. We had a heavy band of light powder pass through last night. So I hightailed it up the mountain and caught one of the best powder days of the season. Met a new ski buddy, Ney from Pollock Pines on the mountain, and we shot a few pictures. Hope you enjoy.

This is Ney on our first run down Preachers Passion. We were the 4th chair up so the goods were untracked except for Ski Patrol (who by the way, got the best runs).

Ney took a couple shots of me comming and going on Avalanche bowl

And just so you know what 18 feet of snow looks like, Here is a shot in the Parking lot.

I hope a few of you can get out here an enjoy the bounty this year!

Nice!!!! Lucky you! I love that shot of you coming toward the camera. That one's worth framing.

How are those 6-Stars in the deep powder?
FANTASTIC!! Talk about a quasi aphrodisiac Cirque, I will be there mid March, and for a Mid-Atlantic Easterner (suffering I might add) this kind of snowfall is heaven-on-earth. Thanks for the pics.

Good question DOC. I only have a 1 ski quiver right now and it is the 5 *'s. Been thinking might have to rent powder skis if this keeps up.

The 6 Stars sink in powder and bust through crud. Ney was demoing Pocket Rockets and was really happy with them. I am looking for some skis with a wider waist because powder is one of my favorite things to do. I can maintain a balanced stance but have a habit of riding the tails a little due to the lack of profile. I often ski in tight trees like this. So the 6 Stars work great in that situation! With speed they float very well in the tips, and I have no problem in powder. I have skied the 6 stars in deeper and heavier snow than this and never had a complaint unless there was a walk out on a flat. They are not the ultimate dedicated powder ski, but more than serviceable for most of us that have skied powder for the past 35 or so years. These work great in powder if you are a good powder skier. I might be in the market for a fatter ride.

Thanks for the fix, Cirquerider. A friend and I are headed your way for the first time ever on Jan 23rd. I'd say we picked the right year! It's looking more and more like that will be my first day out this year. 11 days and counting...

HAHAHAHA you poor suckers out west got nothing on us! Check out this pic from back east!!!

Seven Springs is skiing on a 6 - 12 inch base of loose spring conditions, with numerous bare spots and limited terrain!

Aren't you jealous now!!!

Thanks, Ullr, for the perfect example of why I have yet to hit the slopes this year. It's pathetic in comparison, huh?

Hey things are looking up. We're suppose to have a heavy frost on Sat.
jsut spoke to the guys on the hill. Snowmaking will commence sometime tomorrow as the temps drop and will go full force as long as they can. Cold weather is expected for 10 - 14 days. My guess is that they will be fully open again somewhere in the Sunday-Monday timeframe.

We have sunny weather out here in California now, and I think it signals a major pattern change that should make the East much colder, and hopefully more snow. I have family in Pittsburgh that are also 7-Springs regulars with season passes. They visited during the holidays and enjoyed the snow here. We are all pulling for you guys to see a major improvement in your ski season!

Yes, Cirquerider, it looks completely different from that mid-December day we skied together at Heavenly! Thanks for the pictures. I WAS wondering what it looks like now. I WILL be there in mid-March and hope will get a chance to do the glades with you.
I tried to find any reasonable fares out of Cleveland or Pittsburgh for this weekend but could not. Any shuttles from to South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento airport?

For you AE, you don't need a shuttle. You have my number. Would enjoy carving with you ANYTIME. The ride to the slope is on me.

For a bargain, you can get a United Airlines E-Fare from Cincinnatti to SMF for $285.00 leaving Friday and returning Monday or Tuesday. But if you leave from Cleveland, the same trip is $985, bummer.

The Legacy GT in the photo is a long shot for the "Your top pick car for skiing" thread. Its an automatic and has been an excellent snow car. When I was living in the mountain snow however, I would use the raised Yukon SLT with a plow to clear the private and unplowed county road so this car would not high center. With less than 8-inches on the road (in other words an open road), it does fine. With a lower center of gravity, it handles slick mountain roads better than taller heavier vehicles. The most recent versions of this car deal with its biggest drawback....a lack of horsepower (accelleration) compared to what I normally drive. Skis easily drop through the opening in the center of the backseat. If I have to carry a crowd, I pick a bigger vehicle, but for personal use, this one is ideal, and it breezes through chain control stations.
