Trolling for Sunshine

I'm heading to Sunshine with the wife & kids Jan 21-24th. I expect to be spending 30% of my "on the hill" time with my daughter (11 y.o., solid level 7) and 30% with wife & son (beginners). That leaves a fair bit of time for Dad to hit the steeps...hopefully not solo. Although I'm sure Goat's Eye will keep me plenty occupied, I'd love a few shots on the Dive, if it's open, but won't have a partner unless I can beg/borrow/buy beers for one.

What is the Sunshine on-hill social scene like? I usually ski MRG and there's never a problem hooking up with another individual or group, but I realize that isn't the case at alot of other places.

Do any Banff locals have any pearls they want to share?

Me: 44 y.o. level 9. Comfortable in tight trees, steep chutes & at speed through powdah & chowdah. Been ice climbing up Icefields Pkwy a couple of times, but never skied there before. I'll be bringing 184 XXs and 168 LBFs.

Mad Trappers in the old day lodge and Chimney Corner Lounge in the Inn are the main watering holes on the hill. You might try asking around in the hot tub too! Delerium Dive has been open a few times in the last week, I haven't kept close track since I'm not ready for that yet.

It looks like some of the double blacks on Goat's Eye are ready to open, and I've seen some tracks going down Far Side and Wild Side from across the valley so it may be that some people have jumped the gun. Conditions are reasonable, but another big dump of powder would help.

Thanks! I'm staying at the Inn so I'll force myself to visit the gin mills.

After surfing death cookies and glare ice over rocks at MRG, "open" and "reasonable" are highly subjective terms.

I'm around and up for dive action if it's good. It's not tough to hang at the gate until someone comes to tag in with. You know you need to have a shovel and transceiver to ski in the Dive. Pm me when you're coming if you want to grab a couple of runs in there.

Well, sounds like you have lots of offers but I'm game too if you want to pm me. Pray for more snow because right now the Dive isn't worth the long lap times. I know the Dive has all the hype, but in my opinion there is just as good or better skiing on Goats Eye, with shorter lap times. As long as you get off the beaten track and know where you are going. It still could use some more snow too. Keep you're fingers crossed!
