Marker Motion 1200 Bindings

I bought a pair of one year old used skis and they have Marker Motion 1200 bindings on them. I took the skis in and had them waxed on Friday. I asked the techs if they knew what the locked and unlocked was for on the bindings. He responded that he had never seen bindings like that before and had no idea what unlocking did. Can anyone out there shed some light on this for me? The bindings are currently in the locked position. I am wondering what this feature is used for having never seen bindings like this myself either. Thanks.

Your tech must not know much about Marker bindings. That is the Piston Control lever. On allows the piston to dampen ski rebound much like a shock absorber on your car, off turns the piston off.

Check out the Motion 12.0 Piston Control in the first link which should be similar to your binding. The lever at the toe piece is the control. Straight ahead has the piston on, lever to the right is piston off. I have the same bindings on My Volkl G3 rock ski's. The second link is Marker's explanation of the piston function.

Bong,

Thanks for your reply. My bindings look different than those pictured on the weblinks. I can't see a piston. Instead, their is a u shaped metal bar. At the bottom of the binding, their is a screw that can be set to two settings. One is a padlock. I don't have any levers, just a screw control. My 3 year old is sleeping in the room where I have my skis stored so I will have to wait to get to them. I agree that my tech isn't too sharp but since I live in Mesa, AZ what can I really expect? They must not sell many demo bindings in my neck of the woods.

You didn't mention that you had demo bindings. Demo bindings are different in how they mount and adjust since they are designed to allow adustment for many boot sizes. The lock allows you to move the bindings to different positions for different sized boots. The u shaped bar probably allows the toe piece to move forward or back. There should be a similar lever or screw that allows the rear binding to move also.

You may want to contact Marker directly and see if you can get an instruction sheet for your bindings. There's a link on their website.

Edster,

That isn't a demo binding...it's the regular Motion 1200 from the 01/02 season - the first version of Motion.

You want that pin in the "locked" position. It's what keeps the binding on the rails.

Lock 'em Up

Troutman has it right. That little screw, that is on the binding about directly under your arch, is what is used to mount and unmount the binding. With it in unlocked, the pin can be removed and the bindingd slide off the rails (ie. for setting sole length (depending on the version). Locked keeps them where they belong. I'd think twice about having my stuff tuned at a shop where that knowledge is not available. Besides, tuning isn't that hard and there are lots of how to resources out there. The biggest expense, and must have item, it some sort of 'ski vice'. ~$70. Beyond that, it's all downhill, and the files from your local hardware shop are just fine.

Thanks for the update Troutman, I wasn't aware of the differences from the 1st generation motion.
