well, guess they can't complain about no snow anymore

They'll get 10 feet and all the roads and ski areas will be closed for a week. Then the avi danger will be so high that only groomers will be open for the following week.

At least some of yu are getting good snow! They're calling for 70 degrees in DC next week. Time to check the tire pressure in my bikes!

Winds are extreme on the summit right now. In the past hour, 67 MPH at Squaw High Camp and 107 MPH at Sierra crest. Track winds from NOAA stations here: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/rev/remotedata/screst.php

Hwy 88 to Kirkwood is closed in both directions and only the Reut chair is operating. 50 and 80 are both under chain controls. The most recent update only calls for up to 8-feet by Monday, but the storm will continue. I'm impressed whether its 8 or 10 feet!

Watch those cornices grow, and hope the Patrollers enjoy their first tracks while the rest of us are on hold at the base.

I took a two hour lunch and did some turns at Stagecoach (Heavenly). Great snow, winds probably to 35mph, temp probably in the high 20's. Surprisingly not as heavy snow as I'd expect. I think the worst is yet to come.

I am planning to head out tuesday. by then tahoe would have been hit with at least 6 ft on top of 6-8ft they recvd last week. should i really be concerned about avalanches. I am planning to ski only within the resort boundries. I have never skied backcountry. are there any signs I should look out for?

(I am thinking sugarbowl or squaw)

Marty if you stay off the extreme steeps in bounds you should be ok. If you decide to hit some of the extremes like hidden gulley, 58's, Palisades or even Silverbelt, ski with a buddy and if you have them, take a avy probe, beacon and shovel. At least for a few days.

It should be sweet as long as it stays cold.

FYI when I got up this morning the reports were Chain controls from Gold Run to the Stateline. That's 40+ MI of Chain controls. : Hope everyone that tried to go up had lots of patience. Gold run is at about 3000 ft if I remember correctly. Most of the time the chain controls go up around 5000 or higher. Usually only around 10 miles of chain controls and that creates a huge backup.

As much as I want to ski, I'm glad I didn't make the trek this weekend.

Ill be there Sunday night

My fingers are crossed in hopes that Ill be able to get up there from Sacramento Sunday night. Hopefully by then things will have settled down a bit and the plow drivers will have worked their magic. I will have a 4WD so if its open...Im driving!

I would like to ski Saturday, but right now (Friday 10:00 PM) Interstate 80 is closed from Applegate to the Nevada State Line, Hwy 88 is closed and Hwy 50 is Chains controlled and may be possible. Even if you get to a ski area, the lifts will likely be closed to the summit.

Too much of a good thing?
