dig in both elbows...this will rotate your feet to the downhill postion

It probably won't work for sh** on ice but it works on spring snow and I even stopped myself from going off a cliff on loose shale in Canyonlands with it.
Next time you visit the library or an outdoors shop (one that carries books, like REI) peruse through Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills for the chapter on snow travel. You'll find a nice section on self-arrest with and without an ice-axe.
