If you are not staying slopeside ski in/ski out ( like the fabulous Inn at Solitude) then downtown SLC is the way to go.
I live in a condo down town and drive to the Inn at Solitude every day.
Even with the 5' of snow we got in the last week, I was able to come and go with out problem.
Little cottonwood Canyon ( home of Alta and Snowbird) closes more often but if it does then worst case scenario you choose from one of the other 7 resorts within an hours drive.
If I was visiting would stay downtown and ski
Solitude, Alta, Snowbasin, and Snowbird. in that order.
If you want luxe then hit Deer valley one day..
Downtown hotels are also begging for occupancy when we are full, week ends & holidays, so you can get some fine deals. Also Hilton and marriotts there for redeeming reward points.
Plus you can wal to a wide variety of shopping, dining, dancing, drinking,etchttp://www.visitsaltlake.com/ski/indexphp_wpromos.php
is the ski salt lake site, the have hotel packages that include tix to one of the 4 cottonwood resorts.
It is also a goldmine of info on the Salt lake area.
good maps so you can see where your hotel is and what is walkable from there.
FYI 1 SLC block is 1/8 of a mile.
we have wide streets here
