Important Announcement:Gathering@7 Springs

Well, I'm sad to say that things are not looking good. Our man on the mountain, Taylormatt, just e-mailed to say that coverage is going fast and there is even talk of shutting down until winter returns. I think we should cancel for now and try again later this winter. I sure hate to have anyone travel on such a poor outlook.

Let's keep the option open through this weekend and see what the 7 day weather outlook holds on Monday.

Any comments?

Makes sence. Tough decision, but with what the snow, or there lack of, looks like, you have to do what you have to do.

The decision should be real easy by about Wednesday. When there is simply nothing left to ski on, we cancel the gathering.

Things at Laurel were deteriorating fast yesterday. I'm sure 7S is only marginally better. No snow making temps in the weekly outlook and rain forecast all week. Things are not looking very good at all.

All the e-mails and posts say to cancel. As Matt said, come Wednesday little if anything will be left.

I think that it's time to start talking about alternate dates.

I'll make the official cancellation announcement tomorrow, since that was my stated intention. That will give me time to get out some e-mails.

This was shaping to be a great event, if only mother nature had given her blessing. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused but, that's skiing in the Mid-Atlantic.

The only safe way to do this is to plan about 2-3 weeks out. Is this enough lead time to give all interested a chance to plan?

Short notice is OK with us as long as we are around, we may be on a trip, but then you folks will have a good time anyway and there will always be a next time...

Maybe we can shoot for the MLK weekend. I know it will be crowded but it is a 3 day weekend.
Sorry to hear that the 7S trip was cancelled. I hope we get to go sometime in the future.

This works out good for me. I will be up north this weekend anyways. I did not want to miss an event on my home MT. I hope to attend the next event. It does look bad up there, good call. BTW , I think Matt teaches more lessons than anyone on earth. I always see him on duty.

Dude, It's looking highly doubtful we'll even be open for milk weekend. *IF* snowmaking starts next Thursday night there won't be much caverage for Fri/Sat/Sun. This has to be a record for us.

$224 R/T to Denver Sat to Tuesday...anyone want to split a condo at Winterpark or Vail for a few nights?

I may try to check out Snowshoe this weekend. Unless they lie like rugs, there are supposed to be 41 runs still open.
Wow! 41 isn't too shabby. I haven't made it to Snowshoe yet this year. I have gone the past couple years though. It is a great mountain! Hopefully the weather at that elevation/in that part of WV is better than this crappy rain! good luck
p.s. When I showed my student ID I got 5 bucks off my lift ticket at Snowshoe.
Well, I'll take the 5 bucks - sure. I wonder if there is an age limit for their student discount? I'm a medical student and have the Univ. ID -- but I'm 41yrs old!:

I was at Snowshoe on the New Year's weekend and all I can say is don't go, period, until it gets colder there and they can make a ton of new now.
Thanks Andrew. I haven't totally decided, but I'll wait and see. My skills are so low-level that I don't require much. I just want to use and reinforce the stuff I re-learned at Breck the other week before I forget it/lose it. Where I go doesn't have to be steep, deep, difficult, or gnarly - all I need is a slope with some white stuff on it. Ya don't need ta run the Tour De France when all you ride is a tricycle.:

I was also at Snowshoe New Year's weekend. While it was not great, it was better than expected. Upper Shay's (Now closed) and Upper Cupp were beyond my expectations. Pretty much the whole mountain was in good shape all things considered. As soon as they have 2 nights of snowmaking, then all will be well again.
I just remember the conditions significantly deteriorating the two says I was there. By Saturday I could push my pole (w/ basket on) down through the snow to the soil beneath. It was primarily slush by Sat at noon with some snow here and there on the edges at Silver Creek. I'd say wait for some first-hand reports of decent snow before going...

Matt, I have a RT ticket to Denver in waiting (had to use a voucher), but with the Steelers in the playoffs I cannot go till after they are eliminated or hopefully after the SB.

Hey Matt, yunz was no Stiller fan anyways and der ain't no Stiller football 'til next week. Make some tree runs for me while I add my tears to the rain that washed away Laurel's base. Bring some winter back with you.
I hope winter does come back w/ me.

14" over the last 48 hours, 4-8" expected tomorrow, 4-8" Sunday and 3-6" Monday.

I'll think about you Stiller fans

I got my bucket, trees...here I come!

Hey Rob,

We ate/drank (ok, drank more than ate) at an Irish bar on Sat night with some old friends from Denver. You'll be glad to know the manager kept a terrible towel behind the bar and ran around waiving it all night while we were there once he found out where we were from.

At least there were Stillers fans (beyond Mara) in the mountains this weekend <EG>.
