Guyf: heal quick and enjoy March!
I demo'd and really did not like the 162 B5; I demo'd, absolutely loved the 172, and bought them. I was surprised that virtually everyone posting who is my size (5'10", 190#) ,or larger, prefers the 162. I am curious why my preferences are so different from the majority. I'll add that I have absolutely no buyer's remorse, as these skiis continually impress me.
I found with the 172's I was making perfectly carved turns with nice athletic balance, without even thinking about it, both GS and slalom. With the 162's, they fealt so loose and squirrely under my feet, that I had to really, really concentrate on making a balanced turn. Usually, because the skiis turned so easily, I made rather awkward turns, clearly not picturebook quality. Even though I didn't have great form, they were still decent, carved turns, resulting, I presume, from the greater forgiveness of the ski. So I would concentrate and make turns with nice balance and form, and guess what.....
that fabulous feel of the turn( you know, that sensual gusto we get when everything feels perfect) just wasn't there with the 162's, but was definitely there with the 172's.
The differences got more pronounced when I got into high speed, big GS turns. With the 172's I just set my edges and the mountain became my mistress, drawing me into itself in a perfect, secure harmony. With the 162's, I fealt the mountain was trying to beat me up in these turns, rattling my skiis, and making me very aware of the least bit of roughness in the terrain.
So there you have it...one person's very subjective opinions. Any thoughts?
