Actually, it's there for about 5 minutes after you post, then it goes away. As someone with a tendency towards typos and malapropisms, this can subject me to humiliation.

Hmmmmm, that's new,,,,, isn't it? Could have swore I've gone back and edited old posts before. : : Didn't I? Hmmmmmm.

I think it stays until someone replies.

Yep. First post at 12:05, edit at 12:13, but no one had added a reply.

It should be there permanently. If you edit within 15 minutes, there is no "edited by" note added at the bottom, after 15 min. the note is included. Is this not the case? I see the edit link, but that may be becasue of my admin status.

After 15 minutes, the feature disapears completely.

I agree with LM. I wished to edit part of a reply a while ago, and the edit feature is missing. Look at anyone's posts.

Must be your Admin status, AC. Edit option no longer appears on my posts ...it used to. Seems like somethings changed.....

I'm logged in and the posting rules at the bottom of the page say:

You may post new threads
You may post replies
You may post attachments
You may edit your posts
vB code is On
Smilies are On
[IMG] code is On
HTML code is Off

{edit} I've an Edit button for this message now (just posted), but not on any older posts...

It's gone for me, too, including the post above that I edited yesterday. Something has definitely changed.

changes

Mid season last year before the 3 major crashes we had talked about problems with people deleting posts or editing posts after someone replied to a thread. The problem was that people were deleting posts that really created a continuity problem in many threads. During that time I remember we had decided to stop people from editing old posts. When we installed the new software in May, I thought I had set it up the same way and a few members noticed that they were able to go in and actually delete posts and threads that they had started and sent me a PM concerned that this could be a problem. The only way to go back to the old restrictions was to set a time out for editing the posts.

I currently have it set for 45 minutes to edit a post which should allow you to fixed typos. 20 minutes is the limit to edit a post before the forum starts adding "edited by"
Admin's and Moderators can edit and delete any time.

Thanks for the explanation, dchan. Maybe I'm nuts, but it does seem the time out for editing posts changed recently?

Here's the old thread you were referring to - I think! ...I remember it differently...

Correct. However with the new software the delete function is tied to the edit function so if we enable the edit function we also have to allow for delete which tends to create different problems. Let's see how this goes. we can always extend the edit function to say 24 hours? Of course I don't know why anyone would want to edit after 24 hours and I can see that causing some problems in continuity. I'll reset it to 2 hours for now.

correct, the change was made this weekend.
Last year we made it so you cannot delete, but could still edit (with the notice that an edit was made). This seems to me to be a good approach since the ability to edit is in my eyes an important feature.

I will discuss this with dchan and others, but it may take a few days since I'm ultra busy at the moment.
As I ponder this think maybe an extended ability to edit, like 24 hours or even 48 hours might make sense. I'll dig around the software and see if there is a way to disable the delete function without affecting the edit function.
dchan, see my PM. The software will let us do whatever we want.

I notice it's back... What did ya'll decide?
Posts can be edited (with the notice that an edit was made after a brief period), but not deleted.
Turns out that my first mistake that required deleting occurred after this was changed... Its titled "mistake" in the instruction section. I posted twice... My apologies... i thought i was going to be able to go back and delete it without anyone knowing... but apparently not. Now who feels humiliated.
