Day trip for kids - less 2 hours NYC

We live in Westchester Co, NY. We went to Thunder Ridge a few times, was fine for the kids, and only 35 minutes away. They are getting board of Thunder Ridge. Any decent spots that offer alot of terrain for 8 and 10 year olds that are within 1.5-2 hours from TZ bridge?

Lots of greens and easy blues are their speed.

Try: Catamount in Hillsdale NY -- http://www.catamountski.com
and Butternut, in Great Barrington MA -- http://www.skibutternut.com

I'm in lower Westchester and make Catamount in under 2 hours. Slightly longer drive to Butternut. Both have lots of easy terrain for kids. Catamount has one pretty steep run when you can ski on your own, and it's generally less crowded than Butternut. On the other hand, Butternut has better snowmaking.

Slightly longer drives -- around 2.5 hrs or more -- Belleayre -- http://www.belleayre.com/ Bigger area, still very kid friendly place. Horrendously ugly website but a beautiful place to ski up in the Catskills. Daytrips easily done from Westchester. Longer mileage than Butternut or Catamount, but the Thruway miles go way faster than back roads to Berkshires.

Finally you should check out NY fourth graders ski free program at
http://www.44free.com/ I don't think it's limited to NY residents; gets you 3 free lift tix at most NY ski areas. When my twins were in 4th grade we used it at Catamount, Belleayre, Windham, & Plattekill - amazing deal.

Well, it is not open yet..i dont think...but Ski Sundown in CT may be a nice change of scenery. Otherwise, if you feel adventurous, WINDHAM in NY is a nice mountain intermediate mountain....that will be pushing your time allowance though.

Windham is a nice family oriented place, can get crowded on the weekend if all the runs are not open. http://skiwindham.com/ Drive time from North Jersey is about 2 1/4 hrs.

what about Elk in PA? It is about 25 mins from Binghampton, NY

Sundown and Mohawk in CT are both great mountains for kids. They've both got about 600' of vertical. Catamount and Butternut have about 1000' vert. You'll find lots of families at all of these places. Butternut is my least favorite because it is just too flat.

There are other places in CT but they aren't worth the drive for you with Thunder Ridge being so close. I learned to ski there about a million years ago when it was called Birch Hill.

Belleayre is what you want, skip Catamount.
