For a randonee novice would this be a good set up? Other options: my 188 g4s or 200 snow rangers.
Do you have any way of knowing at this point what kind of bc skiing you would mostly do on *this * pair?
If it's mostly powder and cut-up stuff in the backcountry, I think the Explosives would be perfect.
If you're going to be like half powder skiing and half spring corn or hard snow in chutes and such, then the g4's might be a good way to go. Of, if you see yourself starting to use your AT skis in-resort a fair part of the time, then the g4's might be the call.
Bottom line, if the AT rig will be essentially backcountry only, go with the Explosives. If you envision things like spring/summer skiing, then maayyybbeee the g4's.
Is that sufficiently wishy-washy for you?
Either pair would make a great setup. You almost could flip a coin.
P.S. In case you haven't figured it our, I'd bag the Rangers as an AT ski. The other two are better skis, IMHO.
