Jeez. It's like--if you'll pardon the weak analogy--changing Volkl to something like Eastern European Ski Company. Nothing like killing a great brand! (From brand to bland...)
A good friend works in the lift dept there.
If I remember the story correctly it goes something like this. A handful of years ago, a mrktg consultant performed a survey (don't know details) asking if folks could place Purgatory on a map. Survey results placed the ski area in AZ, NM and Utah - with a small number placing it in CO. They chose Durango Mtn Resort to indicate the 20min proximity.
Many locals, employees and frequenters were upset more so due to a good number of ski trail name changes that had been oh so Purgatory. The old names were changed from bold heaven and hell references to more generic and nondescript (or BORING...yawn) names.
A few years of local backlash and the Area name has been generally accepted as Purgatory at DMR. Some lucky locals must have one of the old trail signs like 666 in their garage.
