Here's the deal: Lake Tahoe is in a giant granite basin, and the lake is formed by runoff water from melting snow. Also, water that gets taken out of the lake basically ends up back in there. There is basically only one outlet: the Truckee River. see: http://www.tahoeinfo.com/visit/faqs.html
As someone who has visited Lake Tahoe every year for the last 37 years, I can tell you that even though the lake is one of the clearest in the world, the water used to be clearer.
So, when someone asks you to conserve water at Lake Tahoe, please do so, and stop calling people enviro-whackos just because you picked a lousy hotel. You sound like you are ignorant about conservation when you use immature labels.
If you won't help maintain Lake Tahoe, then stay at home and screw up your own area's water. [rant off]
But I will stand by my opinion that there are many folks out there who have only a limited knowledge of conservation--most learned some theory at a college and live in a city, I suspect--but sure have strong opinions that other "stupid" people are screwing up the environment.
On the other hand, I am completely for preserving the wonderful natural resources we have. Including Lake Tahoe. Whether I go there for 37 years straight, or not.
Notice in my post I used the word "if" to describe the motel's policies. I have also stayed at other places at Tahoe and found their water pressure to not be so stingy. I had hoped that my post would be taken as a comment on the motel and not stir an environmental sensitivity.
But I can understand the latter. In my visits to California, I have witnessed actual human poop and medical syringes in the water of Orange County beaches (I surf, too), junk floating in the Merced River driving in to Yosemite and the brown air over many cities. That's too bad.
I know I live in the most backward, redneck state in the Union and certainly don't have the moral authority to even have an opinion on this (written with apporpriate sarcasm); but, our air is clean and you can drink the water directly from, probably, 95% of our streams. I know. I go fishing in them and enjoy a refreshing drink from them often. No poop. No garbage.
I'm all for keeping Tahoe clean. Believe me. But I also know that some people go way overboard on the political side when a little more effort on the practical side works much better. Befriend people to enlist them in efforts--works better than telling them they are stupid. Just ask Kerry.
Best to all. Will be in Tahoe in Feb. But in a different motel!
