"Always get high in the gates."
"Leave no turn unstoned."
"Why turn if you don't have to?"
And, my personal favorite:
"Slalom and GS are just events...downhill is a cult."
This probably belongs in the movie quotes thread, but maybe you need to accept that:
"Sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you."
-The Big Lebowski
I dont get hit because I have hold of the bar first.
As a motor mechanic for 25 years I have above average grip, forearm leverage and a more evil death stare so I get no arguments..
Its to save the unsuspecting others from bar slammers and some attempt at curing bar slammers of their arm spasms.
I think I can spot them now too, the "fidgeter" in the lift line is a high probability bar slammer.
Getting hit in the head by the bar is usually because people trusted others on a chair to not grab a metal bar and slam it on the head of the person nearby.
So they have to accept partial fault for that.
Skis are not just pieces of wood, steel and fibreglass. They are tools of escape. A medium of personal expression. A way to challenge fears, push limits and share incredible experiences with your friends.
I can't remember where I saw this, but it epitomises the love of skiing that I have for it.
In the parking lot at Breck on Monday:
Fully exasperated woman, in a southern accent, to the man getting suited up at a nearby car: "Excuse me, sir, but how on EARTH are you supposed to put on these ski boots??"
And at the top of Joker in Contest Bowl on Saturday, a boarder girl looked to us: "Excuse me, but what's the easiest way down from here?" Um. We finally told her she was about 10 feet too low for the easy way down. She could either traverse to Horseshoe Bowl (still double black, but less steep), or hike back up and find Four O'Clock.
From one of the ski mags back in the 70's. It was meant to be a put-down to freestyle skiers, but it turns out to be sound advice, so I borrowed it for my sig line.
"If you can't ski, do tricks."
Does wonders for edge control and balance.
This one got me to try skiing at 36. :)
