Length of Atomic SX9 Skis

Thread Starter
I've decided that I am going to buy a pair of last years Atomic SX9 skis. From what I have read, they are the right ski for me. The problem I have is that I can't decided between the 160's and the 170's. I am 5'8" and 170 lbs. and consider myself an advanced skier. From what I read online, I keep going back and forth between the two lengths. Up until this year I have been skiing on straight Volants so this will be my first set of shaped skis. Any advice to help me choose one length over the other would be greatly appreciated.

I'd vote for the 170cm if you want to have more of a GS ski. If you want it more slalom like I'd go 160cm.

If you are going for a 160cm, did you look at slalom skis?

Your my height, but weight a little more then me. I would go with the 160s you have more control all around. If your a speed freak go with the 170s. But I would guess you probably just want a good all mountain, so 160 is your best bet.

With time you may like a 160, but you will have a difficult time adjusting to the lack of fore and aft support coming from straight, longer skis.

I think the 170 is a better idea. My fiance went from 195 straight skis to 170 Atomic C9's and was very happy as it wasn't too huge a jump. She's shorter and lighter than you and an instructor.

I'm 5'9 and just bought 170 SX11's I weigh more than you by 20 lbs or so, but the 11's are stiffer so that should make up for the difference.

170 really seems to be a good all around length for a lot of different skiers, 160's can be a lot of fun, and as noted would be a great short turn ski, but you can still lay down linked short turns easily on 170's and the confidence they give at speed will be appreciated if you do like to go fast from time to time.

I have the SX9 in a 170. Stas-5'10"@180#. The SX has a radical sidecut so short swing turns are easy and the 170 length gives you good floatation and lots of ski for speed. Going from a straight ski to a shaped will take a little time to adjust so I suggest a 170cm. A word of warning! Don't let the shape skis run straight keep them on edge.
