where to mount my explosives?

Thread Starter
hey!
i finally managed to get my hands on some of the last explosives here in europe. they're the wizard graphic ones with the small twin tip and yellow sidewalls. i'm totally psyched and want to ski them asap. but i need to mount them first. and that's the problem. they don't have any marks on them to indicate where to put the bindings. how do i determine the correct mounting point? i don't want to destroy these skis' beauty by drilling wrong holes. and what's chord center? the balance-line thingie? and is that where the middle of the boot goes?
lots of questions, sorry. but maybe you have enough time to help me out.
thanks!

Why don't you tell us how long they are?

I usually mount all of my skis in my basement.

Staying with Phil's approach to this I can only say your post has a rather iffy title in the age of terrorism! Didn't anybody else see the pun?

Now punning aside, I think that you measure straightline from tip to tail. The toe should be at half that distance from the tail. However, don't rely on me for this. Don't you have a quality shop you can take them to? Mounting bindings is tricky business and should involve a jig and countersinking of the holes. Don't risk ruining your new skis. LewBob

Don't forget to search under 'Tech Talk', otherwise you'll be jonged.:

BTW where dit you get the Twin Tipped Exploders? I got the straight ones but would love to exchange.

In a safe magazine as determined by ATF!

bwahahaha. Is bringing them to a shop out of the question? They will have the tools, techniques, and jigs.

oops, forgot to mention the length. they're 190s.
and, i wanted to check on tetongravity, but somehow the site doesn't work on the stupid campus computers and at home i don't have internet.
and also, i wanted to get the skis mounted at a shop, but i don't trust them too much (less than i trust you guys) because here in germany shop people are still way more into carving skis (no pun, i mean shaped skis). anyways, i'd rather walk in the shop and tell them where to mount them than to let them decide.
but thanks anyways!

powhog: i got them off ebay. some store called "okay-shop", but i don't know if they have any left, mine were used as decoration (supposedly)

Try 79cm from TAIL to boot center mark. That would be it from the 2003-2004
Volkl reference manual for a 190 Explosiv.
The mount-point on my 190's is 79-cm from the end of the tail, but they are they non-twinned, Red Buddha version. On my wizard-graphic, twinned 180's, it is at 73-cm from the tail. Not sure if either will help, but I thought I'd throw them out.

Also, I find it hard to believe that in Volkl country (the Fatherland), you cannot find a shop who can simply phone Volkl tech and ask the question directly.

Oh, and look here:mounting explosivs ...the Maggots love the V-Ex...

On the 2003-2004 180 Explosivs (Red Buddhas), the TAIL to center of boot is
73.5cms. So it looks like you could subtract that .5 cm from 79. Some folks
like moving them forward from that starting point...

Thanks, I'll give a shot at it.

For mounting infos try Guidos Sport Shop in Esslingen http://guidos-sport.de/shop/index.php , give him a call and ask for help.

Hope that helps.

Powderpunk,

I forgot to say this earlier...

Congratulations on the Explosiv's! You've got one heck of a season of good skiing ahead of you!

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but does anybody know if the mount point for the Explosiv changed between the wizard and the buddha models? I just got a pair of 190 wizards, and not only are they ~3cm longer than my 190 Buddhas (supposedly to compensate for the slight TT), the mount point also seems to be about 2 back of the mount point for the Buddhas if you put the skis side by side and try to match up their effective edges.

This also corresponds to what Bandit Man and John J reported above - the center boot mark on Bandit Man's 180 wizards is 73cm from the tail, but 73.5cm from the tail on John J's 180 Buddhas. With the slightly turned up tail and the slightly longer length of the wizards, shouldn't the mount point on the wizards be FURTHER from tail than the buddas, like 74.5 or 75.5?

Anybody know?
