Alpina skis

Does anyone know anything about alpina skis? I know they make boots, but haven't heard much about their skis. I am looking at these for my son. He has outgrown his youth skis (150), so I'm wondering if these Alpina 160's would be good for him . Sidecut is 102-64-87. The price seems very reasonable, which is what I'm looking for, since he will probably outgrow these by next year.
My son is 14 yrs. old, an intermediate skier, and 5'4" 110 lbs. Please let me know your thoughts.

If his "youth" skis were "straight" skis he probably has outgrown them in length, but if they are modern skis it's more likely that he has outgrown them in weight. I'm a little taller that 5'9" and I ski on 161cm skis, let a tech find the right length for him. Different skis ski better at different lengths.

As for the Alpina skis, a friend's son had them last season, they were OK, but not great! He's an intermediate skier like your son. You may want to look at some other brands too. I know that Elan has some inexpensive models at the intermediate level and that there are other brands that do as well. You may want to check out some swaps, there are often shops there that have NEW old stock skis from a season or two ago at very reasonable prices. Many shops also have a section of these. We just picked up a pair for my niece at a shop, she is 5'6" and 140lbs. They recommended a 153cm ski.

(Note: the skis we picked up for her are NOT the pair I wrote about the other day, they were a junior ski and will go into our local swap.)

I can add very little to teachski's excellent points.

Alpina is IMO much better for cross-country gear than downhill gear, their skis tend to be softer, lighter, and less damp than the closest Elan model.

The one you're looking at would be PERFECT for a light lady 3pin telemark skier in West Virginia, if only it had a waxless base.
