Just plan on taking up to 10 hours depending on conditions and try to do as much driving during the day as possible. You get to drive through some very gorgeous, sparsely populated areas that are also prone to wind. Even if its not snowing visibility can be bad.
I ask with a view to cold-condition driving on plowed roads (20F and below), not to barging through drifts above Tahoe where chains are really the answer.
About 2 winters ago I remember hearing about a Canadian outcry against "All Season" tires on rental cars in cold weather. I cannot seem to find any information on that now.
