Ski Mag for East?

Thread Starter
My subscription to SKI is almost up. Although I read cover to cover every time I get a new issue their focus seems to be the West, which is fine because West is best (however I have read good stuff about New England). However since I live in the East and it is more practical for me to explore eastern Resorts, does anyone know of any good Ski magazines that either focus specifically on Eastern US skiing or give it a fair say in resort coverage (and maybe even, dare I say it, cover some Mid Atlantic Resorts)?

PS I just got my new '04 '05 gear issue of Ski. I'm looking forward to drolling all over the new stuff I can't afford.

With the rise and quick fall of Eastern Slopes Magazine last year, the consensus amongst forum posters was that such a magazine could not attract enough ad revenue to succeed. Why?

The ski resorts would rather spend additional ad revenue marketing through local radio and web sites than on a magazine. The net has eclipsed ski magazines as far as information is concerned. It's easier to find good and truthful information about resorts, equipment, and other issues on places like Epicski than in Ski Magazine. Ski is just one long ad for the Western majors--articles are simply infomercials. If you want real information (the good, the bad, and the ugly) on a resort, you are far better served by a forum with a searchable archive. I think some of the resorts are recognizing this and putting more ads into web services.

www.easternslopes.com looks like a nice website. It looks like they might maintain the website but the magazine cannot be subscribed to.

It seems to me that there is a big "Eastern Skiing Section" in every issue of ski. I just wish ski would cover more of skiing and less on realestate.

Thanks for the link! That is strange that you cannot subsribe to the magazine. When you click subscribe a blank page comes up.I'm going to see if I can find their e-mail address and ask them about it. Maybe they just want it to be an online publication now?

p.s. Here is the comments I left for them:I heard about your website/magazine on epicski forums. However, when I click on subscribe now information comes up. I get a blank page in my browser. People on the forums have stated the same. Why is this?
Thanks for all of your help,
Lindsay

The site was down for a bit yesterday. Try it now.

Eastern Slopes ain't happening unfortunately. They lost a big investor last year so it never materialized. I too noticed their site was still up so I ask the editor about it last week and haven't received a response.

However, N'East Magazine is still moving forward and the premiere issue is supposed to be on stands tomorrow!

Hope this helps.

In addition to AlpineZone, you may also want to take a look at:

There was an article in the new Skiing Magazine that had a group of kids who only film ski movies in the Northeast.

The article said they stupid juvenile stuff like mooning and crap but I would like to see the footage of the mountains.

How is Skiing magazine? I've never read it before. I've only read Ski.

p.s. I wrote to the easternslopers, but the e-mail was unable to be delivered.

Yeah it looks like easternslopes isn't going to happen. I forgot about DC Ski, however they don't touch New England. But they're an excellent source for the Mid Atlantic. www.alpinezone.com looks like it's exactly what I 'm looking for. Thanks for the link. I would be nice if they were in print. I'd subscribe

Yea, AlpineZone looks like a pretty cool site. It listed all 4 ski resorts in my state, so I was happy! It gave trail maps, links,etc..nice site. Thanks

p.s. Ski magazine is $5 for 8 issues at www.magselection.com and $7 for 8 issues on www.mags4cheap.com (free shipping and no tax).

Thank you for the kind words. We expanded our coverage last season from just New England/New York to other Northeast states and lumped in the mid-Atlantic. I don't forsee us expanding coverage any further as it's sort of unique to have a site dedicated to the "right-coasters".

All ski mags suck. They are 97% ads and the text is so biased towards the ads that it's meaningless. Two thirds of pictures are tacky disco ski fashions. Typical review -- "These skis/boots/poles/binding/undies are great. They do everything. Buy two pairs. Tell 'em you read about them in Ski/Skiing/Powder". Next page == ad for what was just reviewed.

I get Ski even though it sucks. I think PSIA members get it for like $5/year instead of the $8/year or whatever civilians pay. It's paid for by ads anyway. The subscription fee is just to mail it to you. I read the three paragraphs in each issue that actually about skiing; look at what pictures are actually snow/skiing; and then throw it away.

I saw an ad in Ski I think that looks just like an article.

It was some guy claiming how the Skiing Edge has changed his life.

Personally I have a Skiing Edge and it does not make me a more fantastic skier and it definately is not a workout.

I like it but for people who are already in shape and have solid legs it is pretty much useless.

I think a wobble board and bongo board give my legs a better workout for skiing.

Since AlpineZone mentioned his site, I'll mention ours. We are ski writers who review destination resorts. So, you won't find the smaller resorts on our site, but you will find the major resorts--East and West, US and Canada--plus there's a link to our sister site that reviews European resorts. We start by describing the resort's "personality" so you can decide whether it sounds like it's right for you, then review everything from where to ski and ride on the mountain to other activities and where to eat, stay, go for nightlife and so forth.

We have several URLS, but our main one is www.skisnowboard.com.

Ever seen SKIER magazine? All Canadian. Most entertaining. Reviews? Not its purpose.

Ski and Skiing are both from the same publisher, and with very few exceptions, the articles month to month are almost the same.

No big difference, IMO.

I disagree that they suck in general. They may suck at providing useful information for ski purchases or vacation planning. But they do have a place...they're just ski porn. As long as you don't take them too seriously. I look forward to every issue of Ski (I think...could be Skiing, same thing) even though I know the odds of finding useful info are practically 0. But it's a good fix when I can't get out on the slopes.

I just wanted to follow up quickly here to mention a new section on our site. AlpineZone News:

http://news.alpinezone.com/

It's unique in that we only cover Northeast skiing news. If anyone is interested in writing a featured article, please PM me.
