Camelback.... - Page 2

One more thing about Blue and I will get off my soap box and stop this personal vandetta ...

I saw a Patroller ripping kids tickets for jumping...no big deal right? Except that he was hiding below the jump and waitind for them to jumo THEN ripping the ticket...Not stopping them from jumping first. I thought it was so low class that I went up to him and told him.

I will not say another word about Blue(ice) Mountain..unless I am pushed and prodded. .

Phil, how often do you ski at Blue? If you do ski there a lot you will know that there is a big problem with little Ass*ole kids who continually cause problems. The policy up there is once a person violates the rules (which are not that strict) they document their name and are given specific warnings that the next time they will lose thier tickets and can be banned from the mountain. Last year was the first year that they actually started to enforce any kind of rules, partially due to complaints and accidents. If the little Ass*oles can't follow the rules and do their jumping in the terrain park and the runs built with hits, rails and jumps, then they desrve to lose their passes. The more the better as far as I'm concerned. My friend was injured by one of these ass*oles when he was skied into from behind by an out of control little bastard. AS far as the grooming goes, get there early and you will find that the moutain is pretty well maintained. They can do better though.

PA Racer, they are not building anythign for 1-2 years. I hope they put in new lifts before that. What other improvements did you hear about?
i was also told that the owner was trying to get approval to cut more trails east of the quad but he's having a tough time of that because that's private land out there. on the other hand the slopeside condos were approved and 1 - 2 years is sooner than i thought! they need to upgrade those lifts first and foremost however. i think i'll fire off an email to them.

Phil, whats wrong with what that patroller did? i think that's great. When people buy a lift ticket they agree to abide by the rules and regulations. The back of the ticket says so. i have no problem with a patroller waiting for a possible offender and not giving a warning before ripping up their ticket if they break the rules . It's also common knowledge that you cannot be reckless. we arent talking about backcountry skiing in Utah here. We all know how crowded Pocono slopes can be.

NO Pa-Ridge, at "Camelhump" I mean "back" they have 2500 vertical with 300 trails! There are no NYC skiers or boarders and everyone there is a level 7 or above, no one under 18 can ski there. Don't forget Camelhump gets 400" of light pow each season. They don't even blow snow there.

Hmm, 800 vert or 1100? Which would you rather ski on????? You can't even begin to tell me that the conditions there are any better than Blue.
Not to mention that Camelback is mostly Greens and Blues with the occasional diamond. Blue has more diamonds. There's a state park at the Summit of Camelback in which you can see 3 states and like I said in an earlier post they have a top notch waterpark (Camelbeach) for summer. In those categories they got Blue beat, but I'm not so sure about the skiing.

I am sorry, these were kids. This was at the bottom of Challnge all the way over under the lift. If the Patroller is doesn't wat them jumping, stand at the top of the jump and stop them. IIRC, it was an evenign..not a busy Saturday or Sunday, it was also before the terrain park had opened. Obviously you weren't a kid when you started skiing.

I grew up at Timber Hill, Now Alpine Mountain. part of the fun at 12 years old was everyone getting together with some shovels, haybails and building jumps, the patrollers and instuctors helped in design and location. From what I saw this wasn't even a jump, but more of a lip. The kids were having fun, again, IMO this was a patroller over extending his authority bounderies.

But blue mountain seems like a possibility. Is that worth a 2 hr and 45 minute drive just for a day trip from where I live though?
I think you know my opinion here.

So this was at least 2 years ago???? Come on Phil. At the bottom of Challenge is the "Falls" which is a steep (but short) black drop. From the top of "the falls" you cannot see below the horizon so it's a blind spot. Many people fall there as it drains the incoming intermediate traffic coming in from sidewinder and switchback. Jumping off of that lip is very dangerous to not only someone who falls there but to the person jumping as well. I am all for clowning around and having fun but that's not a place to do it. How do you know that the "Snow nazi" hadn't warned the little bastards earlier? Was this you Phil?

eastern Pa skiing

A summary of 25 years research: Elk is by far the best in eastern PA, better than Greek Peak in Binghampton, NY. If the drive to 7S and Elk is about the same, do Elk. Blue is the clear leader of the rest, much more worth the trip than Camelback, which, as noted, has a short headwall and a long, flat, runout with lots of crossing trails. BB and JF hardly worth the trip. A note on Blue season pass: I bought a weekday season pass last year, about $350, I think. From Philly, Blue is just a more practical day trip than Elk. Used it opening day, Dec. 9, and then tore my ACL at the ETU at Stowe three days later (successful surgery in Feb., three months of PT three days a week, and I will be at the 04 ETU). A few weeks later I went back to Blue with my MRI report and they told me not to worry, they'll let me use the pass this season instead, no questions asked.

How do you guys think Elk and Blue compare to Mountain Creek as far as difficulty/variety?
Mountain Creek is OK, BUT it is completely over-run by moronic idiots who do not understand any aspect of the skiers code or simple courtesy. The Moutain seems to want boarders more than skiers. The bus loads of kids from the city are just too much for me. It's only an hour from my house but I go to Blue. I tried Mountain Creek (vernon Valley) but couldn't stand it. Personally, although Phil will disagree, the grooming and snow is much better at Blue. My friend skis there with his kids becasue it's close to him but he's always complaining about the crowds and caliber of skier/boarder. One thing that mountain does understand is that season tickets should be reasonably priced! I think you can get a pass there for around $200 (vs. $400 and up at Blue). A good thing they do there is to open the mountain an hour earlier for pass holders. Since Blue opens at 7:30 it's not an issue and it doesn't get any crowds there until around 11:00 on weekends. Weekdays are always good. But since the creek gets so crazy, its a good thing there. Bottom line, if it's close and youcan ski there EARLY and get out, then why not. IF you do live that close, I would rather drive 1.5 hours more and do Hunter or Windham

I see you live near the Creek so maybe you can change my opinion if I'm off base! I am always looking for another place to ski!
I work at the Creek on weekends, as mountain safety, and I hear you on the crowds, and it is a boarder's heaven. Last year, they made some slow zones, even on some difficult trails, and they seem to be working out. Parents feedback has been positive. I like the variety of terrain, even though some of the blacks at South are really mismarked blues. It's the ability to roam from peak to peak that I like. It can take a little longer to get to the bottom, unlike many of the hills of the poconos. On a weekday, or early on weekends, of course, it's not so crazy. And Vernon peak is always more crowded than Granite or South.
I think the Creek, has more acreage (sp) Blue needs to expand a little. Blue has some nice wide runs which are very nice.

Evansilver- blue is very accomodating, I bought my nepwhew a pass last year and he had some medical problems which made it difficult for him to use the pass enough. I sent them a letter and they refunded him pass. can't ask for more than that. It's a nice local mountain, wouldn't drive that far for it, but the 1100 vert is nice; and on weekdays, its great. Early in the week, it's empty.

Blue and Mountain Creek are "about" the same size...I was a Mountain Creek a couple of times a few years ago...It did "feel bigger" than Blue.

No, it wasn't me doing the jumping.

Just how big are you Phil?
Hey Ron,

I'm down buddy. Tickets on you? I'll hold you to that. And Phil come on now. Not even free tickets will get you to ski at Blue Mt. People pay good money there, myself included. Listen to Evansilver. Thats years of research speaking. Blue and Elk kick butt is basically what he's saying...

As for Mt. Creek, they totally want to court borders, especially with that enormous half pipe of theirs. Maybe I'll check it out one day. It seems everytime I think about going someplace other than blue I always end up at Blue. The one time I decided to make the trek to Elk I got in a car accident just past the exit for Blue and did not ski anywhere that day. I kick myself to this day for not getting off that exit and going to Blue. Oh and Phil you didn't ski Blue last year you said. They installed a new snowmaking system. It might help sway your opinion a little.

Sorry to take a tangent, but I was looking around at Seven Springs early season packages and was wondering how much terrain can one expect to be open in mid to late December? I know they are supposed to have good snowmaking and I'd hope most would be open by then.

Barring any freakish warm weather, we *usually* always have 100% open by Xmas. We opened on December 4th this year with the entire front face open. The next day, the North Face opened with all but a few small connecting catwalks and the natural snow glade areas. By mid December we should be in full swing...barring any warm spells/rain. The only area that may not be open yet are the glade areas on the back side, but that can change overnight with a good storm.

You can cut the price down even more if you stay at hotels in Donegal or Somerset...only a 10 minute drive away. Unless you plan on utilizing 7S's nightlife and don't want to be driving, then stay on property.

Phil, I still offer YOU the tickets, I was busting on PA-Racer about not offering HIM tickets! PA-Racer, yes I bought a pass. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will get out there early.
Oh, heck, he is on his own. I will pay for MY ticket if he DOESN't come (just kidding, I still want the free ticket). LOL. Maybe we can avoid Blue altogether and just play some golf this summer?

I hope this happens again this year. Pam and I will be back around the middle of Dec for tune-up lessons (I will NOT be in the trees!!!!).

I hope it is too, It's not often we open with that much terrain, but the snowmaking is getting better every year so...

I'd love to see an earlier opening this year, skiing by T-Day would be awesome.
