glades at Timberline, WV

I'm going to spend a weekend skiing at Timberline, WV in late January and I'm hoping to spend a lot of time in the trees. I saw on their trail map and Cherry bowl glades is no longer listed as a trail. I also know that the best tree skiing there is between the official trails, but since this will be my first time there I do not know where. If anyone has any xperience with Timberline and where to go there to find powder in the trees, your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try asking this question over at www.dcski.com . Lots of specialized local info over there. In fact there were just a couple of long threads about the glades at T-line (WVa) and Canaan V.

aschir01, please post a link to the info on glades on DCski. Cherry Bowl is on the map shown on that web site. I haven't been there since Laurel re-opened so T-line may have closed that glade. Too bad if they did. I skied it only a few times, really nice, steep and long.

Check out Blue Knob for glades. I know we talked about that before. If we have a good snow year, come to Laurel and ask if I'm(Rob)on the mountain at the ski school desk. I'l show you a few nice runs.

From what I read on DCSki they logged BK and ruined most of the glades. Left them piled with brush piles and stumps.

This topic has been debated endlessly on DCSki as Physics Man (a DCSki regular) mentioned. The Cherry Glades is the Mid-Atlantic's version of Corbett's couloir--the best expert terrain we have. There's only one problem: it's out of bounds and kind of overgrown.

Here are some of the more interesting strands:

Canaanman's Comment

Canaanman is a local snowboarder and kind of the oracle of Delphi when it comes to tree skiing at Timberline.

WV skiier - thanks for the readings at dcski.com. Those look to be up my alley. Springhill - I definitely want to ski Blue Knob this winter and the trees at Laurel look like they might be fun if you know your way around in them. I'm graduating with my master's in late January and hope to get a job in late March / early April so I can log a lot of days on the snow this winter. If I manage to be intentionally unemployed for the winter I will make my way up to PA for sure...

I'll be looking for you although I must warn you, my ski time at other resorts will probably be curtailed. Since Laurel announced opening so late we are short of instructors. I'll be very busy and will be spending a lot of free time there.

I am planing to Ski Blue Knob, T-Line, and Laurel Mtn. this winter. I sweat the more challenging slopes at these more rustic ski areas.

FYI, I was able to ski the intermediate glades at BK last season. They were well covered given all the early season dumps. Although skiable, they were not in the best of conditions, as reported on the DCSki Forum.

I received this e-mail reply from Timberline regarding the status of the Cherry Glades:

"The Cherry Bowl is not an official skiable area. At one time it was,
but logging was done in the area and as yet we have not gone back and
reclaimed the area for glade skiing. People still ski the area when the
snow is deep enough but they are officially 'out of bounds'. Timberline
opened new gladed areas this year. The primary new area is from the mid
station pump house down to the mid station lift shack and from the lift
line to White Lightning."

TBONE, the invitation is open to you too if you make it to Laurel. Ask for Rob at the ski school desk and we'll take a few runs.

Also to all interested parties, look for an anouncement for PA, MD, DC, VA, WVA and OH Bears Gathering (Alleghany Mountains Region) in the Meeting on the hill forum.
