Did the Targhee cat last Wednesday (3/19). Impressions are all favorable. We had a great day. Eight guests + 2 guides. Lots of space to ourselves. Open slopes, trees, and bowls. Guides found us tons of good snow. Mostly a mix of shallow powder & soft spring snow. Hit some pockets of mushy stuff on a couple of runs. We did about a dozen runs. Covered about 14,000 to 16,000 feet of vertical by the guides' estimation. The guides claim they are good for 6-9 days of groups out on fresh, untracked stuff before using things up & needing more snow.
The two-for-one spring special is a great deal. $300.00 for two people. Includes breakfast at the steakhouse & a hot lunch out on the mountain. Trade that off against lift tickets + typical meal costs & it is a total no-brainer (even allowing for a decent tip for the guides and driver).
Now some "bad news" for Targhee cat skiing fans. If the info I have is correct, next year will be the last one for cat skiing on Peaked Mtn. Assuming a proposed land swap goes through, two more lifts will be added to Peaked Mtn the season after next. One to the summit. Lots of great new lift served terrain, but no more cat skiing. Get it while you can...
